AFAIK, the problem comes from the "cold" metal in the engine. When you just start things up, believe it or not, but the seals aren't perfect. When the engine heats up, not only does more of the oil lubricate the parts, but everything seals up better as well due to thermal expansion of the gaskets and stuff. That said, I don't think it makes a huge difference these days. It was an issue in the past, but nowadays, engines can take a lot of abuse. As said before, you don't really want to be redlining it right after you start the car, but you can give it a little gas with no problems. PEACE.
