CarGaf: Looking for advice/thoughts/opinion on new car buy

Hey so now the kids are older (10 & 12) come December I'm getting rid of the Dodge Journey loser-cruiser I've been driving since 2013 and I am wanting to buy something far less "family" and way more fun.
Currently I am dreaming about going ballsout and buying a Challenger, Mustang, Camero between the years of 2017 - brand ass new. The major concern I am having is the reliability of those cars and my Google-fu seems to be failing to be bringing up any definitive answers - outside of JDPower which only gives "predicted reliability" scores.

For the record I am not hellbent on only those cars, it's just a childhood dream to have a muscle car. I'm totally open to any sporty, sexy 4/5-seater under 40k.

All advice is totally welcome and any discussion is abso-fucking-lutely happily encouraged.

Ps: I am at work but will be checking this thread on breaks

Now is a great time. Incentives are really good.

Zero chance I would by a Charger or Challenger unless it’s a hellcat. The SRT 392 for 2020 have no listing, instead its Scat Pack. Heard they have quality issues.

Mustangs don’t hold value like some others due to the number they produce and sell.

Camaro... idk. Only 2SS or above.

List what you like and don’t. What the top $$$ you are willing to spend.

People buy muscle cars to beat them up. Unless you’re buying it from a private owner who you personally know treated the car well, it’s best to assume it was abused. This means the likelihood you’ll have to spend money outside of normal upkeep increases dramatically. Of those 3 cars, the mustang is the best in terms of reliability and overall build quality.

basically anything sporty is going to be less reliable and cost more maintain and repair than a non-sporty version of even the same model car. That’s just how it works.

If you need to get it out of your system you can lease one and drive it balls to the wall every day.

Firstly unless you're rich I wouldn't buy new. You can find really good deals in 2 or 3 year old cars. However, you have to know exactly what to look for in terms of accident damage. Even cars with clean bills of health from vehicle history reports can have been in accidents.
I've looked at a lot of Mustangs and I can tell you they're built really cheap.
Brand new cars with misaligned body panels and the materials are very plastic.
They have an awesome engine but they've had transmission problems this generation. Also they're just too common for my likes.

Disclaimer - I'm a Camaro owner

I bought a brand new GTI and love it. 0 to 60 in under 6 seconds, roomy for 4 people, and seats fold flat for a suprising amount of cargo space. I hauled a in the box 60 inch tv flat in the back. Plus it's a lot of fun to drive.

Reading the replies buying new is foolish and buying used could be just buying someone else's issues due to abuse. Bummer, I just want a hot ass car lol. My parents always had muscle cars (68 cougar was my personal favorite) and fell in love with them as a kid. Finally at a stage in my life where I can do it and it make sense for my family. Oh well.

Because it was asked my budget is roughly $35k on the high side. Obviously don't want to pay that much just because I can. I just really want a pretty car with curves/style and not as samey same as everything looks. Performance is nice but realistically I'm not going to be street racing or anything.

I cannot recommend a car based solely on looks. That's a bad place to start when looking for a car.

Buy a double cab Tacoma. It will hold it's value and you can seat 5 people in it. Plus, you will have minimal mechanical issues.

I always thought it was stupid for Dodge to make a 4 door Charger, but then I realized that would be the perfect car for a gearhead with a family. They can sound pretty mean with a few bolt ons. :messenger_smiling_horns:

Also, you can get 996 generation Porsche 911 turbos for <40k now. They technically classify as a 4 seater. Supposed to be quite reliable too - not plagued by the IMS bearing issues of the other trims in the 911 lineup.

Pretty sure you'd have a lot of fun in that :)

If it being a 4/5 seater is a requirement then really, the Challenger is the only option for you. A surprising amount of room in them, and screw the haters. Challengers are badass.

And it is ridiculous to say that buying new is foolish. If you play your cards right (when you purchase, haggling the dealership, trade in, incentives etc etc) then buying new can work out well in your favor.
