cases of IGN overhyping?

the recent psychonauts announcement has had me...thinking.

what other times has IGN caused such blatant overhyping of a "shocking" announcement?

it usually works like this:

IGN: "Expect a special update tonight"
Readers: "!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NINTENDO TO GO ONLINE!!!!!!!!!! WOWOWEEEE@#!!!!!!! HALO 2 TO BE ON PS2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! XBOX TO GET FINAL FANTASY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

IGN: "....you'll see..."
Readers: "!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SEGA TO COME BACK TO HARDWAREZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

IGN: "New robotron sequel with interview!"
Readers: "FUCK YOU IGN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

i think the only real IGN "hype" that lived up to expectations was the mature-zelda thing.

They did that exact same "hott news at midnight!" or whatever thing with Prince of Persia, just before E3 last year.

In retrospect, it's pretty funny how IGN turned out to be right on that one, by all accounts. I mean... When it was revealed what it was everyone was like "wtf! who cares!", and then it turned up on a lot of people's "best of 2k3" lists.

Maybe it's their amateur editors who go on the IGN forums and brag about their big exclusive update, only to let down their insane fans. Toying with anyone is not a good idea, toying with IGN members is downright cruel.

Maybe it's gamers expectations that are surreal?
Sure is!

It reminds me of the time I let my 6-year-old neice hold an ice-cream cone for me. I specifically told that she couldn't even have a lick. When I came back, a half hour later, that little brat had eaten the whole thing. Stupid kids!

Yeah, I hate it when sites do things in attempt to get more hits. *coughcoughgamingageninjagaidenreviewcoughcough* :D

I just want to stop seeing these overhyped IGN news posts on THIS forum unless it really IS something worth looking at.

Most recently, Day of Reckoning isn't that great.

I learned my lession with the WWE games over the last two years. I'm not buying any of them anymore unless there are some drastic changes made to them. I will buy Konami's Rumble Roses though. :)

They overrate damn near every game. They give the odd poor review, but most games they review are in the 7-8 range. C'mon man, most games should rank around 5 or 6. That's the problem with the number grading scheme as a whole, though.

On the other hand, I think all the anti-IGN cultists out there are fucking morons.

Your tag fucking rocks eXxy. And how come AstroGirl doesn't post anymore?

Ermmm...should probably add something to the topic...yes fans go over the top, but IGN know they will, they always do, so they should keep their fucking mouths shut unless it's something of the realistic Zelda magnitude.

Other things that can safely be hyped to hell and back:

Nintendo going third party.
Nintendo joining forces with MS.
Halo 3.
First Xenon screens.
PS3 specs.

And that's about it.

The only IGN hype that was justified was the Nintendo E3 2004 conference. When Matt posted "hot" or "not" spaceworld Link just hours before it started I knew Nintendo was doing it.

two things:

a) don't make me bash your face in

b) that's not what this topic is about

It's not IGN. It's the readers. The people who take some obscure "megaton" announcement in some Japanese magazine and turn it into the next coming. That's the real problem and YOU all know it.

Of course IGN knows this. It's exactly why they do it and, from their point of view, most likely why they shouldn't stop.

I really can't blame them for it either. One guy keeps setting the same trap over and over again, and this other guy keeps stepping in them every damn time. Which of them is an idiot?

What do IGN gain though? Is it website hits? Do people really keep going there that much more to see if the news has come up yet?

I mean, the only way they could know about the overhyping hints is if they're on a messageboard, so you might as well just stay there as you know full well someone will make a topic about it 5 seconds after it's up.
