Castlevania: SotN -- a couple things

At the very bottom of Outer Wall there's a telescope. I found that if you look through it after the bird leaves the screen, you can see the Oarsmen in his boat. Why?? Is that just a little easter egg or does it have some significance?

The Cube of Zoe: what does 'causes items to materialize' mean? What does this ability do?

Why won't Dark Metamorphosis do what it's supposed to? :\

My God I don't remember the voice acting because THIS bad. I could have done a better job as each character, even the women!

The music is just so wonderful (most of it). Reminds me just how badly the GBA Castlevanias suffered in this department (to their credit, some of the tunes were great but never really impressed on the game very much -- part composition, part sound hardware).

As far as I know, being able to see the oarsmen through the telescope has no real significance. Nothing I found out, at least.

Yeah, the voice acting is horrible. The music, however, as you said, is absolutely wonderful. It fits each area of the castle perfectly. :)

Does anyone have some screens of SOTN to put Side By Side to the new DS Castlevania.... Im curious to see the difference in the Character Sprite's for Soma and Alucard and background art??

If I remember correctly, the items that are dropped by the candles do not appear until you get the cube of zoe.

It doesn't work on all enemies, just flesh & blood ones like the zombies, flea men, medusas.

The Cube of Zoe causes items to drop from hitting candles after you obtain it. Prior to that, slashing a candle produces nothing.

The oarsman/telescope thing I believe is just there to let you know that he exists in the lower levels, so you can get over the water.

If you're like me, you'll learn to love the voice acting, because the rest of the game is so utterly gosh-darn freaking awesome. The music is indeed truly legendary. Tower of Fog is one of my favorite game tracks EVER.

I don't really remember about Dark Metamorphosis.

BTW, make sure you get the Crisseagrim (sp?) sword. I'll let you know how if you want. You could say it makes the game too easy, but it's awesome.

I'm afraid that doesn't make any sense!

Oh, and I've played the game before, several years ago. It's one of my favourite all-time games.

I'm definitely getting more out of it this time, though it's obviously never as good the second time around. I'm using the Spells frequently and being more tactical with the secondary attacks or whatever they're called (up + square). Unfortunately I'm finding the game much easier as a result, but oh well

What I was trying to say is that I learned to just laugh it off and get a kick out of it, because the rest of the game is so well-executed in comparison. I don't let it bother me, even though I realize how bad it is. I learned to embrace it. :)

Hearts and other items don't fall out of the candles until after you get this,

causes items to materialize ... from candles

cris is cheap

Dark Metamorphosis is great. Just get enemies to bleed on you.

Wasn't there also one sword that got temporarily more powerful once it got blood on it?

You will be unable to recieve items from candles until you get this ability

The music in SotN is awesome, indeed...the game has a healthy length and an awesome castle...my favprite of all the newer CVs...

don't forget to try and find secret abilities for your weapons (think simple SFII attacks to find them)...not all weapons have a special move but a fair amount do IIRC and finding them and their uses is pretty cool :D

Correct for the most part. Circle of the Moon has fantastic musik though.

Before you get this (the Cube of Zoe) nothing drops out of the candles when you hit them :D

I think the voice acting tried to be strongly theatrical. They almost succeeded in that matter i guess.

I just found out this week there's a Saturn version where there's two extra characters you can play as.

There were also some extra areas of the castle not in the psx version, and hence more music as well, only one i remember off hand is some sort of garden area. Anyone have an mp3 of the new areas?

The only Saturn exclusive track that I can recall off the top of my head is a pretty good rendition of Bloody Tears. If I recall correctly that may be the only extra musical number in that release.

As for the Saturn release, I think it's been said before, but for all the hoopla and the number of fans foaming at the mouth and willing to pay top dollar to get a copy, are really doing so for much of nothing. Playing as Maria is interesting, but not as fun. The extra areas are nothing special. The only memorable thing I can remember is a certain boss battle, which I won't spoil here. You can probably find it at GameFAQs if you're so inclined. Overall, all the bonuses don't make up for that fact that the game on a whole just runs better on the PSone, not to mention that the game was obviously not made with the Saturn's button layout in mind.

Mind you, I love my Saturn pad, and I call death on the teeny controller, loose sticks, and too many shoulder buttons of the Dual Shock series controllers (don't get me started on the crappy analog buttons on the DS2), but this is one of the few times where I'd fall on "the other" side of the fence.

I'm guess i'm the only one that thinks the voice-acting in SotN iz good:(

I don't think it's good at all.

But I love it. Probably my favorite VA in any game.

I laugh every time I hear "Mankind ill needs a savior such as you." :lol :lol

It causes items to fall from the candles, which doesn't happen before you get this ability.

Huh, interesting. I'm about 2/5 through the game. Will many swords at that point have them?

iirc, you can find added-ability swords in the first castle... isn't the jewel sword in the first castle, over by the first merman room?

Every time there's a SotN thread, I always mean to finish my level 99 run, and then forget... one day...

Yea, I bought the soundtrack...amazing..

Awakened Soul is the best song in the entire game.

I "found" the soundtrack... uh, it fell out of a truck

and can I be the 20th person to explain Cube of Zoe or is it clear now?

I always wondered about that telescope. I always thought there must be something more to it, must have wasted a few hours trying everything, but nothing worked and I just gave up eventually.

SOTN is an awesome game though and the 2nd best 'metroid' type game after super metroid. I hope Konami makes another 2D console castlevania for the next gen home consoles. Would love to see SOTN 2 with high res 2D graphics.

Hey, I was just playing this recently too, and I was wondering what the Cube of Zoe does? Doesn't seem to do anything.

SotN experts needed...

There's a point in the game where a narrow hallway has spikes on both the roof and floor. After the spikes is a door that requires mist to go through. So, after getting the appropriate ability, I go through. Then I continue on through many more spikes... until I come to a blue door. Now, I can get through those. But not as a bat. So what's the deal? Do I have to be on the other side?

You can't get through as a bat. You need something else, and it will obvious what it is once you get it. ;)

Hmmm I think I remember....
destroy the spikes, I think

Yeah SotN's music was awesome. Anyway is SotN the best Castlevania? Never played the GBA games or the 3D ones.
In my mind, yes. Aria of Sorrow is excellent and is a must play (especially if you liked SotN), but SotN is often more creative and immersing, I feel. I think more care was put into it than the GBA games, plus the obvious advantages of the PSX -- though the graphics aren't MUCH better.

I think that's exactly it, because if you do whatever it is you do to get him to where you need him, he'll disappear out of the telescope's view.

Haven't cross that yet... don't even remember it...

Another thing

I'm in the clock tower (I think... the place with all the medusa heads and gears). In the bottom-left corner of one of the areas (y'know, tall and narrow - they all are) there is a place to go through, but it's blocked by a small gate that needs to be raised. Now, there's a gear switch above it near water. I can't go in water yet, but I can still move the switch. Yet, it does nothing. What am I missing?

You need to hit all the gears in the room until they go "click". I think.

There are something like 4 gears. Hit all 4 until they click, but make sure you don't get 2 hits in 1 attack (possible with longswords), because the first could *click*, and the second move it past that, starting you over.

Also, when you get the Shield Rod (sounds like you're near that point now), try using both it and a shield at the same time (hit both action buttons at the same time). There are some nice effects, like stat bonuses, cool attacks, and other stuff, and one shield in particular (I'll leave that for a surprise on your part) gives you all the special abilities of the other shields.

And if you're not looking to cheese the game, steer well clear of the Cressigrim
Drops in the Reverse Library from Schmoo
. That thing will tear apart enemies almost as quickly as the aforementioned shield. Not that it's not a cool novelty. It just makes things too easy.

Callous:
Once you get the Cube of Zoe, items will drop from candles. Have we doubled the quota yet?

Hehehe. I think there's still room to further document this aspect of the gameplay in this thread. There are nuances of how to accomplish the feat that I'm still slightly unsure of.

While we're at it, I'd like to know how to get Lara nude in Tomb Raider.

I felt SOTN was the best Castlevania game I had ever played until I played Aria of Sorrow. The soul system in Aria is superb and the boss battles are memorable just like in SOTN. The tunes are also very good. SOTN beats Aria in the music department that is about it.

Aria of Sorrow felt more like a Pokevania game than a Castlevania. Don't get me wrong, it was good (imo best of the GBA titles), but SotN still gets my "Better than the rest" vote. Lotsa little extra shit in SotN that you don't see in Aria, either. Stuff like the Greek letters when you destroy books in the Library, the easter egg that is the Telescope, using the Gravity Boots to give the Librarian a ride, stuff like that. I don't remember anything really spiff like that in AoS, save using a Positron Rifle to cook shit. Which was fun.
