I picked up SOTN at Blockbuster a few weeks ago for $14.99(playing it on ps2, newer model). I never owned ps1 and SOTN gets lots of praise so I decided to try it. So far I like it. I made it to the first save point but when I try to save my game it says "Memory Card not found"? I am using an official ps2 memory card. Am I doing something wrong?

You need a ps1 memory card in your PS2.
