Catching up on X-Men comics

I've been out of the loop on X-Men comics for along time but after just seeing the AWSOME X-Men:First Class movie and getting hyped for X-Men vs. Avengers I want to jump back in. The last X comics I read was years ago I read the first New X-Men book and the first few arcs of Whedon's astonishing. Since then so many new writers and books have come out and I want to make sure I check out all the majory story arcs and the good stuff. I'm planning to read the entire Morrison and Whedon X-Men runs but after that what order do I read X-men continuity up until the present? I want to skip the lame stuff and only read the quality stories.

Start reading Wolverine and the X-Men and Uncanny X-Men. Both of which have started a new status quo so you should have little trouble in jumping on.

Also, pick up X-Factor.

Well, I would recommend finishing Morrisons run on New Xmen, then House of M, then finishing Astonishing Xmen (only until Whedons run).

I stopped reading X-Men and Uncanny X-Men, the only comics I ever religiously followed, shortly after the first film came out. Chris Claremont had come back for the Revolution arc in X-Men #100 and dunno, after a few issues it just completely turned me off. A bunch of new characters were introduced, all of which explained their powers in dialogue bubbles, just the cheesiest shit ever. It turned me off and I quit.

I've heard the comics got much better once Claremont left and Morrison stepped in, but I haven't checked them out
