My friend bought the new My Morning Jacket CD and it has defeated me. On the disc comes a piece of software that won't allow you to copy it unless you install it. It's called mediamax, i think. It allows you to make 3 or 4 "back-ups", but each backup contains this mediamax crap. When you rip the songs to MP3 they skip and generally sound crappy.

So I give props to Sony/BMG for getting a leg up on the pirates, but I should be allowed to rip these songs to mp3. Anybody else seen this? Anybody got a fix?

Wait... extremely stupid question time -- why can't you copy it normally? It's a CD with audio tracks... don't let the stupid software install. Is there a particular reason it won't work as a normal CD?

Once the software has been installed you can't just left shift. It installed a driver, you'll need to goto Device Manager, View/Device By Connection, View/Show Hidden Devices, look for a driver called SbcpHid and goto it's properties. Disable this, reboot. I'd suggest turning off Autorun on your cdrom, if you don't hold Shift when you insert the cd, the software will install again.

Great cd btw, saw them live last saturday and it was incredible.

You can't even PLAY the CD without installing the software. Copying it normally either fails or the music skips as if the CD were scratched badly.

So it's as simple as overriding autorun? cool...I'll give it a shot.
