After getting harrassed so much in the mp3 encoding thread, I thought I'd try ripping a CD in VBR.

I'm using CDex with LAME 3.96, and I've got some VBR uestions

This is what it has for VBR Methods:
-VBR Default
-VBR-Old
-VBR-New
-VBR-MTRH
-VBR-ABR

I know VBR ABR is average bitrate, wehich I think means it'll hover around whatever bitrate you specify. I'm clueless as to the others.

Also, there's VBR Quality 0-9 -- are these how many passes are made through the file or something?

--alt-preset-standard and --alt-preset-extreme are what you want to use for VBR.
Make sure you're using 3.96.1 (mainly for speed optimizations...)

VBR 0-9 determines how "sensitive" the encoder is to switching the bitrate when the encoder feels it is necessary. The lower you have it, the larger the filesize, but you will also get better quality. VBR 2 is the default.

You're wasting your time asking about anything else unless you want VBR for a really low bitrate range (but even then, R3Mix is a good idea).

So you're saying it's not good to have some idea about what the program is capable of? I find that to be silly.

Not really, unless you want to beta test or something. It's a good idea to be aware, but don't waste too much time on something you don't really need to use.

In which case I would suggest tinkering with VBR in the LAME 3.97 and LAME 3.40 unfinished releases. They don't even have presets yet. Try to find some bugs if you're so obsessed
