Celebrity Death Tears

So Sir Clive died today. End of a pioneer. https://www.neogaf.com/threads/sir-...-the-zx-spectrum-dies.1618709/#post-264619799

Whose death are you dreading as ending a chapter of memories in your life?

Personally I'm shocked hes still going, but OG Doctor Who Tom Baker for me. Every happy memory I have from early 70s to the early 80s have a corresponding Dr Who memory.

Bonus modern scene. How I cried tears at the end of this. Best love letter to a show ever. I don't think there's ever been a better scene written that turns sadness and despair into joy. (The actress Liz Sladen is the same lady as the Tom scene above).

Sean Connery's passing was the one I didn't want to happen.

The last show I watched on network televisions was Boston Legal. It’s by far one of my favorite shows with James Spader and William Shatner making it perfect. When they go, it will be a rough day that’s for sure.

Heath Ledger, Robin Williams and Chester Bennington all fucking destroyed me. Robin Williams, in, particular, as his films helped me through some tough times.

I’ll be devo’d when David Attenborough dies.

I am Become Bilbo Baggins
Prince.

A true musical artist who actually wrote and produced his own music. What a legend.

Anthony Bourdain did it for me. I remember growing up watching his stuff. The guy was fun and spent many weekends just hanging at home and watching him strut about the world and monologue.

To have a guy with so much and who had come back from so much commit suicide? Hearing that he died like that just made me tear up. It was a sad end to a great guy.

Alan Rickman was a big one. Scott from Stone Temple Pilots although that was hardly shocking and at least I got to see him perform first.

Stan Lee was another now that I think about it. Though not as much as Bourdain. Stan had a great life and lived long enough to see the character he helped create grow to be worldwide successes both on the page and on the big screen.

Rik Mayall, Randy Savage, George Michael.

Dreading lots. Probably members of Duran Duran the most. Hopefully it's a long while away.

What time is it?
Earl Simmons. He was a really conflicted person. He's the only rapper I've ever heard that I completely believed every word that came out of his mouth. I'm not even sure how to describe this but even though he had a laundry list of bad things he had done, I think there was a good person inside him but he could never find the way. You could always hear the pain in his voice too. I know it sounds weird, but I always dreamt of meeting him and I just wanted to give him a hug.

2 stand out more than others to me. An odd coupling but singularly understandable.

Biggie and Leslie Nielsen. Big left right near the ascension to his prime. Leslie Nielsen had always made me laugh through my childhood.

Bowie too. Bowie hit differently. I got into Bowie super late. I leave whole genres untouched until I see a specific recommendation that catches my attention. It was actually GAF hype for Black Star that got me into Bowie a few months before his death. It was very strange to suddenly like somebody and then. That's that.

Man clearly 2020 was so fucked up I never even heard about Sean Connery dying

Those who go too young get me. Heath Ledger, James Gandolfini and Robin Williams were big shocks. Even Paul Walker although I had no particular affinity to his movies but he was way too young. And Norm MacDonald this week was out of nowhere

Im dreading Russell Crowe (really needs to sort out his weight and health for his age). Anthony Hopkins, Morgan Freeman, De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci and Jack Nicholson aren't spring chickens anymore and all pushing into their 80s. Clint Eastwood is 91 but still seems healthy as an ox and making movies. We will have some big losses over the next decade or so

In better new Bill Cosby is mid 80s as well

John Williams : Every time I read his name on an article, I think, Please don't be dead.
Hayao Miyazaki : He will certainly die drawing another movie, followed by a State funeral by Japan.

Robin Williams was a sad day for me, grew up really admiring his work.

I think in terms of celebs who have yet to die, probably any of the remaining Monty Python crew, especially Michael Palin who's books I've been reading for decades; he feels like one of the family despite only having met him once.

I think i can speak on behalf of the UK and say when Sir David Attenborough passes, we better get a fucking week of mourning and a state funeral.

To add, i could give a fuck about celebs dying but Keith Flint was a toast raiser, i've seen the Prodigy so many times throughout the years it was genuinely sad to hear he had taken his own life, the only other celeb that actually nearly got a tear from this aul cunt was hearing Freddie Mercury had passed, that put a genuine lump in my throat when i heard it over the radio.

That's a good list. I'd add Sigourney Weaver, Kate Beckinsale, Helen Hunt, all my heartthrobs from the 80s / 90s.

Funny story I always loved - my mom dated James Cameron back in the 70s when he was a photographer in Malibu (he hadn't released that first weird film he did with the Xeno title). She thought he was arrogant (naturally) and ended up moving to Miami. I always joked with her that James Cameron could have been my dad, but she'd always say "Yeah but then you wouldn't be you!".

Norm, recently

Mitch Hedberg
Anthony Bourdain
Ryan Davis from giant bomb

I don't really think about celebrity deaths before they happen...too much other shit to worry about. It'll be weird when athletes I watched as a kid start to die but we still have a while yet for those.

I balled my eyes out when Mr. Rodgers died. They had a picture of his shoes on the front page of the news paper that day 😭

I haven't cried over a celebrity death ever but Norms passing really got me down this week. He was one of those "chicken soup" kind of deals for me that always helped me feel better when I was down. There have been others whose passing got me down. Bowie. Piper. Ramis.Nimoy.
Arnolds passing will probably kick me in the nuts.

The big one for me is James Hetfield. I've loved Metallica for 25 years at this point and they were a huge part of my life as a late teen to early twenty-something.

Problem with celebrity deaths is that u grow up with those people and they became your inspiration in some way or the other. Then suddenly when the death happens u realize your imaginary high bar of life shit the brick and it impacts you massively as the perfect person u tried to become also is just a human at the end.

This is why with Robin Williams a guy that always puts a smile on you and was a great actor with high morals and feels like a friendly dad figure as he's always nice to kids suddenly kills himself it hits you hard.

GAF's very own treasure goblin
I remember a friend hiding in a bathtub at a party high on shrooms crying about the death of Jim Morrison. We laughed at him while pelting him with Cheetos.

I also cried over Freddie Mercury's death (at another party) while severely intoxicated.

My girlfriend at the time said something like "What did you expect? The guy did ass to mouths with men, women, animals & furniture".

We later separated over creative differences.
