Cell Phones as replacements for landlines

I've been considering this for a while, but can't bring myself to do it. Anyone here that only uses cell phones, as opposed to both cell phone and a landline? I wish there was a way a static 'cell phone' could be offered for the home exclusively.

Any advice with regards to this?

Edit: Uh.. it should be "as" not "are" in the topic. Could a mod please change this?

I've been doing this since about January of this year.

Only downside is I haven't hacked my Tivo's yet to stop nagging me about not making a call.

Only other downside is that while I always have my phone on me, my wife keeps hers in her purse meaning I can virtually never get ahold of her.

My recommendation: don't let the cellphone-only solution change your availability. Some people think because I only have a cellphone now they can always get ahold of me when they want. My phone is their for my convenience, not theirs. I don't answer every call.

oh, another downside (temporary). It can take up to a week to port a landline number to a cellphone. It took SBC around 5 business days to do it for us. during that time you can't recieve any incoming calls on your cellphone. it is weird.

I made the split from my landline about a year ago, and I'm happy with it. It's much nicer having only one number to give people now (and only one bill to pay), and I'm hardly at home so it made much more sense to go cell phone only.

The drawbacks however are that sometimes when I'm at home I'll be in another room and won't hear my phone (not a problem with landlines since most people have multiple phones). Another issue is long distance, but I'm sure there is some cheap cell phone long distance plans? I only talk to family long distance, so they always call me back since they pay a monthly long distance fee.

I'm cell phone only. There really isn't a reason for me to use a landline except to send and receive faxes. My apartment has a separate buzzer system that isn't tied to an actual landline phone.

^ Long distance is the same as making a local call within North America for me. I haven't had to call international in ages. I guess Email is the replacement for that.

I got rid of my landline about six months ago, but have been wanting to do it for a long time before that. I'm getting it reconnected, but only because my security alarm on my house requires it, so I'm getting the $6/mo option where I'm limited to 40 calls/mo and I'm not giving the number to anyone. If you're thinking you can get away without a landline, you're probably right.

I only have a cell phone, and I don't think I could go back. I'd say the only bothersome thing about it is making sure it's always charged, but it's not that much of a big deal. Just make sure you get one with good reception, because you don't want your main phone line to be some staticky piece of crap.

Other than that, it's awesome being able to take your main phone line and voicemail with you wherever you go and not having to worry about missing calls or having to go back to your apartment to make a call. It's kind of freeing. Some people would say "but I don't want to be a slave to my telephone"......well then just turn it off when you don't want to recieve any calls.

Also, my apartment buzzer works with my cell.

I'm really close to getting rid of our landline(only needed for alarm system) or at the very least cutting back to the minimum usage plan... til I went to the site to do just that and found out that Verizon Fios is now available... damn... damn... damn...

My roommates and I have been doing this for years. Most of my friends do, too. No reason for landlines when cable is better than dsl and you get cable tv with it too.
