"Check with your doctor"

You ask him about that thing that's concerning you and he brushes it off without explaining anything. Ask again and this is what happens:

"Holy shit you're such a retard and a hypochondriac. I'm gonna write you some Xanax and get you to see a psychiatrist ASAP you pathetic piece of garbage. That'll be $300 you animal." Obviously he would not use those exact words, but the meaning is nonetheless communicated clearly.

Every time there's some medical PSA that says "check with your doctor" I am reminded that 90% of the doctors I've seen have behaved this way.

I have ascites right now that they couldn't figure out. It's been 3 months and they've started talking about psychiatry. At least it's been so long that it's become mild enough on its own to live with. Probably an infection. :|

Have you ever "check[ed] with your doctor?"

Yeah a lot of family doctors can be cantankerous like that. Probably because local hospital systems are cramming more and more patients in than ever before. The last few years I've had different doctors not even entertain additional questions beyond the ones you made the appointment for due to time concerns.

I feel like today's doctor visit is pretty much:
"Hey doc, I have a problem with *this*, what can I do?"
"Hmm, you should probably take this prescription, should fix it."
"oh ok."
Bill shows up for $500 plus prescription costs.

They're just fucking overpriced drug dealers.

Hmm, what's the common denominator in all these interactions? Hint: it's not the doctors.

Yes it is, they are unwilling to answer questions because they have this idea that the patient is a plebe and they hold all the knowledge.

I am a normal weight. I don't smoke. I don't drink. I try to eat healthy. I ask about things that concern me. The problem isn't me.

Just to know, how much is it for a visit with your family doctor? And how many patients can a practice have?
Asking about Americaland of course.

If you have ascites and they rec a psych consult - it means you need to stop drinking. Stop blaming doctors

Doctors have to see 2,500 patients a day. They don't give a fuck about your problems or your excuses. You are on your own.

I don't drink alcohol or do any kind of drugs. They are making sure I'm not "stressed" because they suck at figuring it out and need to pretend my questions are inane in order to save face by engaging in gaslighting.

I don't care how many patients they have to see. It's not a charity service. They're getting paid for their time.

PCP here. I had a rant posted, but I'm going to refrain from posting it. I would be lying if I said I haven't been close to despair at work in the last 4-8 weeks from the absolutely massive burden being placed on us right now. I will say that patients sometimes have utterly unreal expectations about what we can do in medicine in 5-10 minutes. Medicine is screwed up.

My doctor just deligates to specialists if you have any issue other than a virus/infection. He literally shrugs and says I will send you to such and such. He is really nice though and isnt against prescribing stuff or sending me to get tests.

I can understand that. Many take it out on the patient though, and that's unacceptable. I didn't have unrealistic expectations, just like, maybe don't gaslight me. Try talking to me like an adult and let me know what part is hard to figure out.

I've faced hardship at work too but I've never taken it out on customers.

My family doctor has been dismissive for years, until she missed a whooping cough that I somehow contracted, because she thought it was a seasonal virus. Since then she's been super nice for some reason.

Had one Dr kind of like that, but I think it was because she was dumb and just following the script rather than being intentionally indifferent.

No idea what your treatment status is, but if you haven't yet, go to a doctor in a hospital. They have been much more likely to recommend specialists and needed scans than private practice docs in my experience. Are they unable to figure out the cause or do they not believe you have it?

They've detected it in various tests (ultrasound, MR enterography) but they're stumped about what caused it and figured they'd just get rid of me instead of pursuing it. I've seen several hospital doctors now, but by the time I got to a decent one (months!), it had gone away by like 90% so now we're watching and waiting. My liver and other organs are clear so there's no cancer. The last doctor said it might have been viral. I'm thinking it's diverticulitis because when I eat things like nuts and seeds it gets a lot worse (the ascites is in the RLQ - the initial suspicion was appendicitis which led to the imaging tests, which revealed fluid in Morrison's pouch and surrounding the small intestine). I'll be seeing the not-psychotic doctor again soon. It's kind of tolerable now but when it first started I was just dying. I had chills (no fever though - although I never get fever even when I'm sick), extreme nausea, joint pains, and fatigue and felt like I was just gonna pass out.

I've had a lot of health problems over the years and I'd estimate about 90% of doctors I've seen must have been C students who barely graduated from med school and just cover up their inadequacy by gaslighting. They like claiming you've had a panic attack or are just a hypochondriac but then when tests come back positive they get pissed off and become defensive. I've gone through this a million times.

Diverticulitis isn't fun. My Dad had that and had to remove part of his intestine.

Have you been allergy tested? Seeds and nuts can cause that too. Good luck. I'm being treated for cancer so I've run into a lot of doctors. Fortunately most have been pretty good so far.

I have been tested for allergies and food intolerances years ago but I was told by the doctor (and I've since read online) that they're not reliable at all. Anyway it's unlikely for allergies to cause ascites. Usually it's liver damage and/or cancer, or something like peritonitis. Yes I read a lot of medical stuff. But I'm not a hypochondriac; I've just had to help sick relatives plan their doctors' visits (as I mentioned earlier, ~90% of doctors where I live are hacks).

My family doctor when I was in 20's said I needed to see a psychiatrist. I had no mental issues I was just absolutely exhausted with the work I was doing.

So I went to one they suggested and they didn't know why I was even there. (more money).

A decade later (different job) told the family GP I was feeling down because of stress in work and drank a couple of beers before bed.

He called me an alcoholic! I was shocked. (I wasn't one). Imagine wasted AA's time when you only have a few beers a night.

Yeah GP's can be absolute cunts but don't work for free. Don't know American prices but here is expensive too.

Also whoever said they see 2.5k people a day, must have been walking though a war-zone.

Best of luck to you OP, I mean that.

I went to the doctor about intermittent fasting since it’s always recommended you talk with your doctor before starting a diet program. He asked me a few questions about family history and told me that I could do it but it really doesn’t matter since family history is the most important part of longevity. My grandparents and parents are just as big as I am and they are in their 90s and 70s respectively. I guess we’ll see what happens.

You Americans have some scary medical stories in here. Can’t imagine being scared to go to the doctor because of funds. It’s really unbelievable to me.

I went in years ago with concerns about my heart. Took a day off work about it. Had a battery of tests run. Their diagnosis?

"Well, something isn't normal, but we don't know what"

And they sent me on my way. No follow up, no nothing.
