Now, which came first? It makes sense to me that the mock turtle was created as a play on the mock turtle neck. Seeing as Wonderland is Alice's fantasy, it would make sense that Alice, having heard the term "mock turtle neck" before, would imagine a "mock turtle" to look something like the one pictured. However: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was first published in 1865. Did they have garments they called "mock turtle necks" at the time?

Discuss.
 
All this talk of sweaternecks and soup leaves me cold.
