Church Complains that Networks Reject Ad

According to a United Church of Christ statement, the ad says that the church seeks to welcome all people, regardless of ability, age, race, economic circumstance or sexual orientation.

"Because this commercial touches on the exclusion of gay couples...and the fact that the executive branch has recently proposed a Constitutional amendment to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman, this spot is unacceptable for broadcast," the church quoted CBS as saying.

The 30-second spot, as shown on the church's Web site, features two muscle-bound bouncers standing outside a church, selecting people who could attend service and those who could not. Written text then appears saying, in part, "Jesus didn't turn people away, neither do we."

The commercial can be viewed at www.stillspeaking.com.

The church says the ad has been accepted on a number of other networks, including ABC Family, BET Discovery, Fox, Hallmark, TBS and TNT.

Don't trust a church that thinks it needs to advertise on national television to get members.

Nor should you trust a church that has the money to advertise on national television.

I’m not a fan of religion, and along those lines don’t approve of churches advertising on television, but I don’t see anything wrong with the content of the commercial itself.

Clearly this proves that Christians are persecuted in this country.

No, this is just a network being a bit too safe. I'm getting a bit sick of the persecution complex members of some groups have.

Seeing as how the Bible belt was such a factor in the election, I guess anyone who relies on advertising revenue is definitely going to stay away from any potentially heretical religious advertising for a while.

I was being facetious, along the lines of the latter part of your post.

I hope this doesn't open the door for more religious commercials.

Dave: Hey Bob I've got great news!

Bob: You save a lot of money on your car insurance?

Dave: No but I found Jesus

[Screen fades to black and back in again with the following message]

Southern Baptist Church all the salvation with 39% less penance than Catholicism, 60% less guilt than Judaism and you never need a compass

[fades out and in again]

I suspect that the networks think it's objectionable by implication. The Church of Christ doesn't turn people away...but those OTHER churches do.

Even as hardcore agnostic as I am, I can only see religion promoting tolerance as a good thing. This is definitely a step in the right direction.

Now, CBS says it has a policy against any potentially controversial issue ads, and against any ads that proselytize. But the way they put it in the memo...

I dunno if the United Church in the US is the same as or similar to the United Church of Canada, but up here they're pretty cool. They did gay marriages before they were legal, and are generally very socially liberal/progressive. They're also the second largest church after Catholics here.

I guess there's no official tie between the two, but their histories sound similar.
