Americans elected a science and climate change denier. Whether he change his mind or not, we have to deal with him and his climate sceptics for 4 years.

CHANGE YOUR LIFESTYLE, GET MORE HEALTHY AND SAVE MONEY!

  • Be energy efficient
  • You already switch off lights — what's next? Change light bulbs to LEDs. Unplug computers, TVs and other electronics when not in use. Wash clothes in cold or warm (not hot) water. Dryers are energy hogs, so hang dry when you can. Install a programmable thermostat. Look for the Energy Star® label when buying new appliances. And a home energy audit is cheaper than you think — book one today to find even more ways to save energy.
  • Eat wisely. Buy locally grown foods. Avoid processed items. Grow some of your own food. And eat low on the food chain — at least one meat-free meal a day — since 18 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions come from meat and dairy production.
  • Improve the power efficiency of your home, including cooking, lighting, temperature control. The latter in particular - learn to use air conditioning less - don't turn it all the way up or down during winters or summers (something people in NA just love to do) - a good deal of the cities' power grid capacity goes toward air conditioning at peak summer/winter moments.
  • Improve the insulation of the apartment/house as that is a major factor for less air conditioning.
  • Don't drive powerful vehicles - you don't need 200hp to commute. Better yet go electric, or high-efficiency Prius. Actually, best of all..
  • Look for public transportation routes to your work, or share rides with family and colleagues. City highways full of one-person vehicles is a major air polluter.
  • Don't do laundry every day - use higher quality detergents, which allow for less frequent washing cycles.
  • Don't run your dishwashers for a couple of dirty dishes - dishwashers are efficient only for large quantities of dishes. Otherwise they're water wasters.
  • Don't spend half an hour under the shower - no human activities require such long showers, if it takes that long for you to shower you're just indulging yourself.
  • Go in a nearby park area and plant a tree. Trees are the most efficient co2 countermeasure we have.
  • Install Ecosia : The search engine that plants trees! https://info.ecosia.org/what
You can see their business report here : http://documents.ecosia.org/369415/8948549
  • Many power companies offer huge rebates for green appliances and FREE home energy audits. Many times you can stack these rebates on top of tax credits, too. See ComEd's page, for example, for Chicagoland: https://www.comed.com/WaysToSave/For...gleFamily.aspx
  • Energy.gov has great tips on how to reduce your energy consumption: http://energy.gov

HOPE AND ALLIES

To win a war, you need allies, and you need hope. Despair will always lead to defeat. Remember the Earth was never, contrary to popular belief, able to sustain humans in a decent manner. The life of our ancestors was a constant struggle. The progress we have made all comes from human intervention and science ; vaccines, agriculture, clean water access, transport, energy production, medecine. With this comes a great responsability to take care of our planet and it's ressources, but it should not be a source of constant guilt. We must adapt and move forward.

Many people are working on this problem!

Watch and share!

You are not alone in this fight!!!

Honest question, what can donating do to prevent some of the awful shit Trump plans to do when he and his party are in full control?

Again, serious question. I'd like to know what methods these organizations would actually use with more money that could actually make a difference.

Awesome idea OP! Cutting Beef out of my life feels so good. Ultimately I want at least half of my meals each week to be vegetarian. Other than that, it all comes down to making conscious decisions and voting with our dollar.

I'm getting a hybrid. Not as clean as a completely electric vehicle, I have no choice as I have literally no means of charging it in my country. Public access is abysmal and I don't have a private parking lot to equip.

The thing is, even without any consideration for the environment, these type of vehicles are the most interesting to get nowadays. They're barely more expensive, they consume much less gas and are much more reliable than a traditional engine. Insurance prices are also more interesting. To top on that, the comfort is top notch, the silence and lack of vibrations is really enjoyable.

Good OP.

Honestly the only way that most people will act in ways to save the planet is when it will save them time and money instead of the opposite. We really are closer to that than we think.

If those Solar roofs really are cheaper than normal shingles (and just as durable), that's a revolutionary breakthrough. I worry about the price of rare earth elements (and the enviornmental impact of mining the stuff) once this realy starts to scale up.

Nothing, other than "awareness". It also seems that one of those is an anti-nuclear fuck. Save that money towards an electric car or a solar panel at least

I'd really recommend doing transit as much as possible instead of relying 100% on a car, even electric cars. There's a lot more to car-linked emissions than just gas.

Car storage (parking, both home, work, and everywhere else) and overbuilt roads take up a gargantuan amount of space that could be used for denser living, which is the best thing for reducing emissions. You've got massive infrastructure development & maintenance costs (pouring concrete, laying tarmac, etc) that have their own emissions. Manufacturing emissions just for making more cars. Plus depending on your electricity grid running a car via electricity might mean more coal burned, which is even worse than gasoline.

Even if you want to have a car for occasional use, just moving a good chunk of your driving over to transit helps all of those.

You have my sword.

Donated and just looking for more opportunities to help. No way I'm going to let Trump dismantle progress on climate without a god damned fight.

A good choice. My mom drives a Toyota Auris Hybrid and it's a very easy and enjoyable ride.
I would love to buy the new Prius Prime with solar roof, but unfortunately the car is too big for my usage. :(

If you're gonna protest, make sure to make signs about NASA losing funding in the Earth Science divisions, their contributions help scientists world-wide have a better picture of how climate change is screwing up the world.

Don't forget to take advantage of subsidies for LED light bulbs. I just replaced my entire house (almost) with LEDs using coupons. I got some bulbs rated at 4.5 W and are just as good as my old 23 W fluorescent bulbs.

It's not just a methane issue. Raising cattle takes significantly more resources (food, water) than chickens and especially vegetables. Chicken farms have their own problems, especially waste runoff, but as a vegan I'd rather see someone switch to chicken than continue eating beef.

this would probably improve the feed situation.
also it would be nice if hidden agendas like veganism could be kept out of the climate change discussion.
cattle and so on accounts for 20% of emissions if I understand the numbers. to drastically reduce that while still being able to eat beef is is a winwin for most people. I'd be first in line for artificial meat that tastes as good as beef, but I think we are a long way from that.

What the hell? If I had a hidden agenda I wouldn't have said I'm vegan. I mentioned resource consumption because that's a serious issue with regards to climate change. Cattle farming is causing wholesale clearcutting of rainforests. High water use is causing shortages, increasing fires, destruction of ecosystems, as well as regional conflicts.

I'm not vegan, but a lot of people who are vegan, are vegan because of the climate change impact of animal-based produce. So how is it not part of the debate?

I've cut beef out of my diet, and try to eat veggie options when I can.

I'm thinking of buying a car in the near future, and I'm also thinking of delaying it a bit so that I can afford an electric car.

Beyond Meat! Other artificial meat products are available.

That solar roof is definitely more expensive than basic panels, but it's cheaper than a new roof. So if you're replacing your roof anyway, it's a no brainer.

Also, there isn't a significant decrease in efficiency between the solar roof tiles and photovoltaic panels.

I'd love to have a fully electric car that can transport 3+ kids safely and comfortably, and doesn't cost $100k+. It doesn't exist yet, which is weird considering by going electric you can free up a lot of cabin space and improve safety and performance by placing an electric motor at each wheel, and eliminate the drive shaft and most of what would otherwise sit in a front hood. The only option is a Model X, which is way too expensive. I thought most big names would have electric vehicles suitable for families by now.

the point was that if we can remove or drastically reduce the emissions from cattle then there isn't much left to discuss on the matter of beef in terms of climate change. obviously we don't know if this tech will work, but assuming it does. - then still some aren't happy with just removing emissions, they want us to stop eating beef period, and that's another discussion.
