Prices in the UK arent looking good. Many say we'll be lucky to get £300 unless they break up stuff into addons like xbox 360.

My bets are on £350 or $550 Kind of a compromise. I have money ready :P

I agree. Sony could go for the kill with a 299 pricepoint. The thing about Playstation 3 is if Sony prices the system at 299, they could feasably keep the price there for 2 to 3 years.

I agree. I mean, PS3 is getting a crippled version of the Cell CPU (7 out of 8 SPEs working, 3.2 GHz instead of 8 SPEs and 4.6 GHz) , the lowest spec Rambus XDR,
a 128-bit bus from RSX to GDDR3. that should make up for the fairly high cost of Cell in general, RSX and Blu Ray.

although I still think it'll cost $399 at retail without a harddrive.

I can't believe people think it would be $500.

Kutagari has joked about how expensive it will be because it will be expensive and SCE are obviously a little nervous about it. Why would he even joke about it if it was going to launch at the X360's price ?
The machine will be expensive, I predict $599 full featured. That gives Sony a long run of price drops until they eventually hit level over the next 3-5 years.
The PS3 will always have better graphics than the Xbox360 with the adition of a Blue ray player (another device that isnt going to be cheap anytime soon). I don't they need to worry as much about price as Microsoft who has alot of ground to try and make up still.

I say make way for three teared console gaming:

Revolution for the cheap easy inovative thrills
X360 for the middleground and superior online
PS3 for the future of graphics

or all 3 for most of us here at GAF :D

And I say screw that. Give me cheap games and consoles from everyone.

But, consider how low volumes are on the early units. They'll be lucky to ship even 100k. Running factories for low runs, the R&D, marketing, and such make for some fixed costs that require higher prices when selling lower volumes.

@$499, they won't be making any real money at all.

It's like talking to a brick wall sonycowboy.

I think most people are just hoping that it will be $399 or less. That would be nice, and it may price out that way, but...

The reality is, the PS3 will have a lot of high-tech gadgetry inside. $499 isn't an unrealistic price for what you're getting. In fact, were the 360 to have a HD drive, I was prepared to pay every bit of $499 for it as well.

Let me ask a question, and I use this to describe the Xbox as well.

Both the Xbox and the PS2 were hardly perfect products in terms of lasting ownership. Dead drives and laser failures, overheating, skipping, not reading certain disks very well.

Now, I have to assume that at least the first shipments of Xbox 360's will be plagued with failures down the line as well. Same with the PS3.

Would you really rebuy one of these consoles if it outlasted your warranty?

Only if by the time the warrenty has run out the consoles have significantly dropped in price then yes. I don't want to have games sitting around without a console to play them on.

Well, I bought a 2 yr. extended replacement warranty, so if it outlasted that, then...maybe. But it's not going to outlast that, wink-wink.

If I had a $400 console that only lasted half a year past the original 90 day warranty before STB, then no. Not until it dropped the $199 or less price point.
