CBS News and Associated Press:

Sen. Mark Dayton said Tuesday he is closing his Washington office because of a classified intelligence report that made him fear for the safety of his staff.

Dayton, D-Minn., said the office will be closed while Congress is in recess through Election Day, with his staff working out of his Minnesota office and in Senate space off Capitol Hill.

"I take this step out of extreme, but necessary, precaution to protect the lives and safety of my Senate staff and my Minnesota constituents, who might otherwise be visiting my Senate office in the next three weeks," he said on a call with reporters.

"I feel compelled to do so because I will not be here in Washington to share what I consider to be an unacceptably greater risk to their safety," he said.

CBS News Correspondent Bob Orr reports that federal officials said they knew of no new, specific intelligence information that would have prompted Dayton to close his office.

U.S. officials say they "know of no specific intelligence that al Qaeda is targeting Capitol Hill, Washington or any U.S. site, reports Orr. And there is no information that any attack is imminent.

Intelligence analysts from the Terror Threat Integration Center did brief members of Congress recently. But, officials say the information shared was "very general in nature -- along the same lines of the threat reporting we've been talking about all summer," reports Orr.

Brian Roehrkasse, a Homeland Security Department spokesman, said the department had no intelligence indicating al-Qaida intends to target any specific U.S. locations.

Added Capitol police spokesman Michael Lauer: "There's been no specific threats against the Capitol complex. We continue to be on guard now, all the way up to the election and all the way through
the inauguration."

Dayton said he could not describe the contents of the top-secret intelligence report, which was presented to senators at a briefing two weeks ago.

"None of us can predict the future," he said. "I hope and pray that the precautions I've taken will prove unnecessary."

Asked what advise he would have for Minnesotans who want to travel to Washington over the next few weeks, Dayton said, "I wouldn't advise them to come to Capitol Hill. I would not bring my two sons to the capitol between now and the election."

Dayton issued a written statement that complained of inaction by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn.

"On three occasions, I have spoken personally with the majority leader and asked him to convene a meeting of all Senators to discuss this situation. I am dismayed, and perplexed, by his unwillingness to meet with us further about the information, which he initially brought to our attention. In the absence of that further discussion, I have made my own decision about my office, as is my responsibility," Dayton said.

I've been told by government officials that if the shit hits the fan again and our sources know about it, we'll see "signs" of it before it happens. Is the writing on the wall?

Well thank goodness all terrorists are part of al Qaeda then.

story up

Members of the group, said to be wearing backpacks, secretly traveled to northern Mexico and crossed into a mountainous part of Arizona that is difficult for U.S. border security agents to monitor, said officials speaking on the condition of anonymity.

The intelligence report was supplied to the U.S. government in late August or early September and was based on information from an intelligence source that has been proved reliable in other instances, one official said.
A second U.S. official said the report is being investigated, but said it could not be determined whether the group of Chechens actually entered the country, as the intelligence source reported.
"We don't know whether or not that report is true," this official said.
A spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection confirmed that the intelligence report was provided by another government agency, but said Border Patrol agents were unable to verify its accuracy.

U.S. security officials have been concerned in recent months that al Qaeda or other terrorists are planning to enter the United States from Mexico.
Intelligence officials said a suspected al Qaeda leader who has been in the United States was spotted recently in Mexico. Officials believe Adnan Shukrijumah, whom the FBI wants for questioning, met with alien smugglers in Mexico and Honduras and was seeking ways to bring al Qaeda members into the United States. Shukrijumah was seen in August in the Sonora province of northern Mexico, officials said.
Since October 2003, authorities have arrested five Arabs attempting to cross illegally into the United States from Mexico.
In July, officials dismissed as untrue an Internet report that said a group of Middle Eastern men were recently caught trying to cross the border from Mexico.
The report apparently was based on a group of Oaxacan tribesmen who were stopped as they tried to cross the border in Arizona. The tribesmen spoke an Indian language native to southern Mexico that may have been mistaken for Arabic, officials said at the time.

There probably is no threat to Dayton specifically...but ya never know. They did off Wellstone...so why not Dayton too? I can see it now, flip-flop St. Paul mayor Randy Kelly joining previous flip-flop St. Paul mayor (and now US Senator) Norm Coleman as Minnesota's US Senators.

I bet anyone anything Randy Kelly, after he loses his re-elect St. Paul mayoral bid in 2005...runs as a Republican for US Senator against Dayton in 2006. Dayton should be scared for his life...they already killed Wellstone. It makes perfect sense....they kill Dayton in Washington and blame it on "terrorists".

Dayton made the right move for his life but maybe not for his political career as they are already attacking him for leaving. One of the Republican US House guys, Mark Kennedy (who is up against Patty Wetterling(an advocate for children, as her son disappeared...big national story back in the day)) just pretty much said Dayton is a coward for leaving Washington. They're already trying to make him look weak for 2006 against Kelly.

The republicans have it both ways. Scare him and make him look weak...thus allowing Kelly to get his seat. Or kill him and blame it on terrorists that we "gave him a briefing about the threat" while actually they were the ones who killed him...just like they killed Wellstone and won control of the Senate in 2002.

Anyone not in Minnesota probably doesn't know what the hell I'm talking about...but whatever. The republicans are out to get Dayton...he is one of the more liberal Senators out there.

I think you need my tag...

they killed wellstone dude. he was the republicans worst enemy as the most liberal senator out there. the republicans reclaimed the senate too by doing it. He would have smoked Coleman...it all makes sense. Throw in a Bush pawn, which Coleman is...although he promised he'd "change the tone"(which he hasn't)...and take out a free-thinking, progressive leader of the next 30 years.

Blame Bush.

Really, I mean, it's so obvious that terrorists are going to try things like this. A strong border patrol and coast guard is more important that having the FBI going into THOUSANDS of American homes for "interviews".

Thousands of American arrested with no charge...with no chance of trial...that's considered "anti terrorism" apparently.

Manabyte, your post is totally backwards and ignorant of reality. Moore never said anything like that. What he did point out in F9/11 is HOW WEAK US BORDER SECURITY ACTUALLY IS!

If anything, he pushed for stronger border security. Moore just owned you and he doesn't even know it.

Oh yes he did, and I have it on DVD!

Direct quote:

"There is no terrorist threat. There is no terrorist threat. Yes, there have been horrific acts of terrorism and yes there will be acts of terrorism again. But that does not mean that there's just some massive terrorist threat."

Here's a screen capture from where he was saying it:

What I posted earlier in this thread "There is no terrorist threat. There is no terrorist threat." is EXACTLY what Michael Moore has said, and him saying that is avaible on DVD for anyone to see.

Good thing Bush is strong on homeland security, and has strengthened our border security.

The funny thing is, here in San Diego they play an interview he gave in 2000 to one of the stations down here where he promised to crack down on the illegals sneaking in. Yeah right.

It was the best picture I could find at the time that didn't have him photoshopped holding an Iraqi flag in back of Sadam or some other stupid photoshop.

I live 2 blocks from the Rio Grande, I can see Mexico from my house, and I'll tell you one thing, finding the balance between using our border patrol and having to seal up the borders is hard as heck. Anytime there is proposed to put the military on the border (as O'Reilly suggests), Democrats pandering to my demographic immediately issue cries of the Republicans being anti-Hispanic.

I trust Bush way more on the border than I would Kerry, who has shown a propensity to say what will get him elected.

The best thing would be a massive guest-worker program along with improved security. The Bush administration has had minimal success with this because Democrats don't want security at the border and conservatives don't want guest-worker programs for Mexicans. Bush knows what needs to happen, he dealt with border security for 6 years as governor, but Washington special interests have gotten in the way.

Yeah, there needs to be a better job at ports and coastal security, but this story is talking about border security. All that said, I don't believe Kerry would do jack, as he seems to say and do what feels good at the moment...

As opposed to Bush "Whatever I said in 2000 to get me elected I'll change my mind in 2004 for political gain".

Yeah you heard me. Just like how he was going to cut down on assault weapons because he thought they were dangerous and terrorists could get them a few years back.

Then Bush saw that he could get all the gun nuts to vote for him in states that he desperately needs by not signing the bill so he didn't sign it. Was it a flip flop? Yup but you probably didn't see that because Bush ran another ad questioning something Kerry did in Vietnam. :p

I was talking about immigration law and reform, not gun control (which I do support BTW, I'm closer to Kerry's position on this one).

Bush changed immigration tactics due to 9/11, but there he wasn't doing it for political reasons, it's obviously outraged both libbies and conservatives...

Still, he very sincere on the issue, and I'm sure a part of him wants to deal more with Mexico, as he was sympathetic to Mexicans and immigrants during his tenure as governor of Texas...
