Scientists say they can tell a Coke drinker from a Pepsi aficionado by reviewing brain scans.

When told what they are drinking, three of four people surveyed say they prefer Coke, according to research published in the current issue of the journal Neuron.

When scientists did not tell the 67 people who participated in the study whether they were drinking Coke or Pepsi, the subjects showed no preference for either drink.

Scientists said both drinks are essentially sugar and water, which makes the classic taste test between the two giants of the soft drink industry a great way to look at the effect of cultural messages on brain activity.

The imaging studies noted changes in activity in several areas of the brain during testing, particularly in the ventral putamen, which is involved in reward-related learning and forming positive associations with eating and drinking, say researchers at the Baylor College of Medicine.

Subjects who knew they were drinking a Coke showed increased brain activity, but similar activity was not seen when subjects were drinking Pepsi.

Coke's advertisements have essentially "insinuated themselves into our nervous system," said Dr. Read Montague, director of the Brown Human Neuroimaging Lab at Baylor and author of the study. "We were stunned how easy this was. I could tell what (study subjects) were going to do by looking at their brain scans."

Not exactly a good thing to say though. =P

Basically, what that was saying is that those who were drinking Coke and were told so their brain activity was higher because of the commercials have brainwashed them into thinking its more pleasurable (which is why their brain activity was higher).

Heh...it's amazing, though. Coke is much, much, MUCH, MUCH stronger than Pepsi is, and has a deeper, more pure taste as well. Honestly, generic grocery store cola tastes better than Pepsi. For those who like Pepsi...probably a) have ulcers, b) have already rotten teeth, c) are pussies and think Coke tastes like lemons, d) all of the above, and e) I'm a total nutcase and don't know what the hell I'm talking about after having 3 hydrocodines and lack sleep and don't look forward to going to work in 7 hours.

Judging from many posters' opinions on what is greater... this isn't far from the truth (after... taking away some of that... exaggeration... however you say it... (i need sleep)). The difference between the two isn't that great at all (as shown through this study).

But what is confusing is that it is Pepsi that is marketed as if it is the cool one, and Pepsi that uses celebrity endorsements to sell it.

I like both, and don't care which one I drink, but I prefer Coke, because it is stronger. I couldn't care less about supporting brand names; I buy all the store brands (except for pop)at the grocery store rather than the name brands (because they are cheaper), and I buy either Coke or Pepsi based on what's on sale.

Now no-name cola (Life Brand, Big 8, etc.) is REALLY nasty. Hardly any flavour.

Coke sucks....I can tolerate it(when a can of it comes with an order of chinese food or something), but Pepsi is better, with no weird aftertaste and coating on my teeth. A friend of mine drank Coke religiously and ended up with a urinary tract infection(that would happen if he drank any soda that much though). Anyway, if I want a sugar shock, i'd rather have an orange soda or a good root beer, or sometimes grape. Sprite kicks ass though.

I did a taste test myself some time ago where the labels were hidden. Coke still tasted better than Pepsi to me, but both tasted good and they were quite similar. Pepsi has a more mellow, sweet taste to it while coke has a kind of sharper, more flavourful taste to me. If I can't get Coke then I have no problem drinking Pepsi.

Same here. I had a bottle of coke today, but I drank at least 6 liters of Pepsi over the period of last week. Those scientist can't read me! I'm not a fucking book, my brain would ring up telling them I drink piss.
