Diamond's shipping List for July 5th 2006. Please note, Americans won't receive their comics until Thursday.

DC and Marvel first look previews for July 5th 2006.

My list:

52 WEEK #9
DETECTIVE COMICS #821
TEEN TITANS #37
UNCANNY X-MEN #475 - Brubaker, so I'm giving it a shot.

nomoment returns to GAF after a five year absence... only to discover things have changed. Paul Dini and JH Williams III are beginning their run on Detective.

BTW, who read that issue of Cassanova last week? I want to say it was excellent, but Fraction was just trying way too hard. Sorry. It's still good enough to pay two bucks for, but it pales in comparison to Fell.

Wow. Dini Time already?

Casanova was like incredibly super great. The first salvo in a new generation of comics awesomeness. I am now confident that comics will still exist when I'm old and everyone who writes them now is dead.

So why am I seemingly the only one here reading Brubaker's Daredevil? It's good, man! Bendis left and everyone jumped off.

As usual, tons of crap in my pull list this week. Some slightly under the radar books I'm taking a look at:

mw1cvr.gif

Personally, I've been loving the monster, western and romance reduxes Marvel has been doing the last year or so. I hope they continue permanently. Amusing stuff.

fr1cvr.gif

Could you make him look any more like Calvin?

fr1p1.gif

And the interior looks kind of like a Peanuts rip off. But, hell, this looks like excellent fun. Perfect summer comic.

bey1cvr.gif

This will probably suck, but I'm hoping it has a The Surreal Life sorta vibe. But I doubt it.

bb1cvr.gif

Ennis, like Ellis, Morrison, Moore and a few others, gets purchased w/o question in this household.

And DC has a new OMAC series? Can't find a preview anywhere.

I'm still reading it. I might go as far as to say that it might be better than Bendis run, but I don't want to jinx it. The tension in the past three issues have been incredible.

It's by Bruce Jones, who's currenly doing a godawful Nightwing arc, and the prologue story in Brave New World was poorly written and made no sense. I'd avoid it.

I'm reading it. But I'm not digging it as much as Bendis and Maleev's run, which I honestly consider to be crime comics' finest ever.

finally picked up some of last week's stuff today

amazing spider-man and fantastic four were both great.

the 3 pages of peter on one phone with mr. fantastic/sue and the other phone with mj/aunt may were hilarious

Peanuts ripoff? It's a blatant Calvin & Hobbes ripoff!:lol Still looks kinda interesting though.

It is indeed a CnH ripoff, but the two one-shots so far were pretty good anyway.

CnH is desended from Peanuts anyway, so that's not such a stretch*, btw.

* get it?!

have decent hopes for uncanny.

looking forward to the westerns.. have really been digging this remixing kick marvel has been on.

detective and 52 will be awesome as usual.

and as a self-serving plug, just to let people know I am starting an online shop in a few months. getting all the requirements worked out with Diamond and putting the store application together. to start off with it's just gonna be a shop where you will be able to get recent sellouts at cover price. my goal is to order obvious sellouts from Diamond and keep them up at cover price until they move. at some point incorporating previews/packages into there would be nice, especially for the readers out there who aren't at their local shops every wednesday on the nose. looking to maybe service people who don't care waiting a day or two for their books, or who are picking up books only once or twice a month anyway. this is NOT speculation.. running a shop has been a dream of mine since I was a teenager. this just seems like the easiest way to get it going until it turns into something bigger. but ebaying a two week old book is definitely not good for the industry and certainly not what my store will be about or do.

While I agree it pales in comparison to Fell, I think that says more about Fell than Cassanova. I was tremendously entertained, and felt that Fraction was gleefully over the top rather than trying too hard. And, hey, the art was fabulous. It's definately dense enough to be worth two bucks for 16 pages and I'll be reading it from now on.

This week is a bit light, but with a couple of manga titles to keep my wallet equally light:

Old Boy Vol. 1 - Yes, this was the basis for the Chan-Wook Park film. For those of you who haven't seen it, Old Boy is about a man who, for reasons he doesn't understand, finds himself locked away in a room for a decade, then inexplicably set free to undertake his revenge. Naturally, all hell breaks loose, and if the manga is anything like the film it's going to be incredibly violent and utterly bleak. I'm psyched.
52 #9 - I'm pretty psyched about 52 also, but for rather different reasons.
Y the Last Man #47 - My, what a lovely cover.
Uncanny X-Men #475 - I enjoyed Deadly Genesis and am curious about the Brubaker run, so what the heck.
Death Note Vol. 6 - Still great, still only 8 bucks a volume. Woo!

Any idea when the next few Ultimate Wolverine Vs. Hulks are meant to pop up? :(

Well the third issue was supposed to be out months ago. Then it was supposed to be out May 16th, then June 10th, now tentatively scheduled for July something or other. Realistically for a 16 page book, we might see it in 2006 if we're lucky.

I need this book now.

52 WEEK #9
DETECTIVE COMICS #821
And that's it. Pretty light week. Will be buying Detective for the first time in years. :D

the new price dress is the best marvel has had in years.. though I still miss the month on the cover :(

is that dress going to be company wide or just for the two x-book jumping on points?

Anyone pick up Talent? I liked it, interesting premise.

And Punisher was badass as always :D

You should definitely pick up Talent. I should be in it. Inside front cover. (Kevin Church's and my strip print debuted in the BOOM! books last week, but I'm assuming it'll be in all their books this month and all months hereafter.)

And Dini's Tec was OUTSTANDING. All Star Batman Mach 2.

'Tec was jizz worthy. So far, Dini's Tech >>>> All Star Batman & Robin.

Also, Brubaker's Uncanny was pretty good. Tan's art was surprisingly good -- which I think can be in much part, attributed to Danny Miki. Miki's heavy inks really cover up some of Tan's weaknesses.

I was actually quite impressed with Tan's work as well, and Brube's much better in this book than in Deadly Genesis. I'm quite happy with this introductory ish. Felt like Uncanny #275. Remember that bad boy?

Uncanny-X-Men-275.jpg

Detective comics was sold out at my LCS:/ 52 was good and Teen Titans was excellent. Nice twist at the end there with
Robin and Cassie kissing

Wonder how they'll handle that.

god damn, that detective comics was the best batman issue i've read in years. i dont care what it takes, tie down dinni and never let him go. NEVER. LET. HIM. GO. teen titans was good as well and 52 had some interesting developments.... the whole JSA story was kinda dissapointing. nothing major happened and there is supposed to be a relaunch in october?
ugh. by the way, a bit off-topic but. where is hawkman? we know he didnt die during the crisis but maybe something happened to him during 52?

I just barely missed year one, but seriously, I can only imagine reading this issue of detective comics is EXACTLY what it was like to find Year One greet you on the stands. ****ing unreal. Williams' art was jaw dropping, Dini told an AWESOME detective story.. I mean even though I had no way of knowing who the villain was at the end, he didn't make it feel cheap. Kind of made it feel like "If you were observant enough you should have caught it" unreal... and we get another one next issue now? man..... kudos dini, that's the best $2.99 I've spent all year.

x-men was alright.. I typically hate jumping on "introduction" issues, but I am so far behind on all the xbooks (well before house of m) that I don't even know what's going on, so it kind of helped. when the story kicked in at the end it started shaping up. and Tan's work.. I was going into it expecting typical Top Cow level art (not a good thing). But he really came through. he was helped considerably be whoever the colorist was. overall I am really looking forward to the next issue.

books that were pretty much sold out at my local shop (to warn some of you)

OMAC #1
Atom #1
Detective
52 #9 (nothing special, but the series has really been picking up steam in terms of sales)
and x-men was selling much faster than it typically does.

so if you want any of these books I highly recommend getting them sooner rather than ebay.

Quick thoughts for this weeks haul....

52 - I might have to read this one again because I didn't get a whole bunch outta this issue... oh yeah look there's Batwoman... Zzzzzzz
DETECTIVE COMICS #821 - In this era of multi-issue stories this was a really nice one issue story. It felt kinda weird that it wrapped up so quickly, but it was nicely contained, and every issue doesn't need a BIG bad to be an interesting read. The most interest part of this was the back and forth between Bruce and Tim, not sure if I'm reading more in to that or not...
OMAC #1 - Well... I have to admit I'm a sucker for reading OMAC filled books because it reminds me of how Iron Man used to be written years ago. You'd get all these technical read outs and status views from "his" view and I always liked that kinda thing... with that being said am I REALLY that curious to see where the backup Brother Eye is? No... not really...
OUTSIDERS #38 - I was wondering how this series and Teen Titans were going to resolve their usage of Brain and Mallah at the same time... except well Brain has a body over in Teen Titans... Not much happens in this issue but I'm liking the dynamic... I'm actually liking Nightwing alot more here than I am his own book where I think he's being written a bit too... flaky.
SECRET SIX #2 - I read this book only for Catman... really... just Catman. That's my only comment this week.
SUPERGIRL #7 - Ok am I the only one confused by what the hell is going on in Kandor, and why Superman hasn't stepped in himself to straighten shit out? I've not read much Kandor related history so maybe there is a reason why Supes hasn't stepped in, but this... is... ridiculous.
TEEN TITANS #37 - Oh so that's how they are going to resolve Brain having a body... ok... I don't think the Tim, Cassie thing is going anywhere.. just two people weak at the same time. So hopefully this means pretty soon we'll get around to finalizing who is part of the current Teen Titan roster? Maybe? Eventually?
INCREDIBLE HULK #96 - I am officially bored of Planet Hulk.
NEW EXCALIBUR #9 - Nice to see so quickly after the Apoc/Drac book they are resolving the Starsmore revelation at the end of that series, curious to see where they are going with Chamber though... and Ozy... I just can't figure him out.. is he for Apoc(usually), against him... running his own thing now... just what?
UNCANNY X-MEN #475 - Set up issue by all definition of the word... and talk about a rag tag team... this is the team I have to read for the next year? <groan> Any bets on how long before Charles (A) get his powers back again; (B) Loses his legs again. This team BTW doesn't look to have nearly enough firepower to take on Vulcan.

yeah, my only disappointment is that for me, uncanny should be half the a-listers and some b-listers, and x-men should have the other half of the a-listers and some b-listers. instead ALL of the a-listers are in astonishing, which is honestly feeling less and less like it is even in the MU, and X-Men and Uncanny have some of the weakest lineups they've had in years. so marvel throws some hot talent on the books to try to sell them inspite of their weak lineups..

if Brubaker and Carey both tell a good story, I won't care too much, but still would like to see at least a few more a-listers involved.

Tell me about it, it's not that I dislike this team as individuals, I like all of them, I'm just not sure how this is going to play out, I'm definitely going in with an open mind thought... and I am SO with you on the Astonishing comment. I think I've made similar comments in my last few thoughts on Astonishing, it's an interesting read, but it's so separate from the rest of the MU and sometimes the rest of the X-books that it's almost like you're better off just CONSIDERING it a completely separate universe. My comic book store manager yesterday tried to convince me that well Joss was given alot of latitude so that he could appeal to new readers who are interested in the X-men but don't want the baggage... I was like hell isn't that what the damn Ultimate line was for? Give me my angst, baggage filled X-men!

I'm starting to lose patience with 52. I'd like more pages used in the story and fewer pages with Donna Troy rehashing shit we all already know about. If they need a platform to outline how the DCU has been retconned yet AGAIN, then do it through the story narrative or just ****ing print a new timeline. I'm tired of Donna Troy saying "Yeah, I remember that" FOR THE HUNDRETH DAMN TIME.

On the flip side, as someone who doesn't know much about the DC Universe I appreciate Donna Troy back up strip. This got brought up at Heroes Con this past weekend, and EIC Dan Dido poitned out that for folks who are jumping into 52 without knowing a lot of the backstory - such as myself - the History of the DCU bit is pretty damn helpful. The hardcore fans can just go, "Hey, nice art" and move along. It's four pages, no big deal, and besides, they're almost done with the recap and will be moving on to different sorts of back-up strips.

Exactly. There are a lot of people, I'm sure, in your position where this is actually quite helpful. And the All Star Origins (NOWLAN?? POWELL?? BOLLAND?? GIFF?? HUGHES??OMFGWTF??) will be starting up soon enough.
