Complete & Unadulterated Current Generation LTD NPD Hardware Totals

First time I've seen Jan. hardware data for the DS and GBA. DS took a dive. To be expected though, considering what came out for the system.

How can we be so sure PS2 won't be in short supply this year though, with PSP manufacturing ramping up and eating it's production lines? I dunno, seems like it could go either way for GBA and PS2 depending on a ton of variables (price drops, competition, software schedules, supply, promotion, etc). Also worth noting that PSP seems more in competition with PS2 actually based on SCE's target audience and pricing figures, I don't think it's that fair to say it'll take from just the GBA market.

How do you think the 'Xenon' release will affect sales numbers? Will it eat into all 3 systems or mostly the Xbox? I think the GCN has a small chance of topping the Xbox this year in hardware sales, or at least the final three months.

The PS2 propbably has one more huge christmas sales season left so long as supply keeps up. The Xbox will most likely take a fall from last year (50%+) but I also belive the GCN will, depending upon the success of Zelda.

I haven't been following sales data for too long so I don't know what happens to software sales at the end of a console's life and following the intro of the next gen. I know that software peaks later but are there any general rules of thumb? was the psone an exception since it is still pushing some pretty hefty software numbers right into the PS2's life?

Again, I'm not broshnat, so I can't be sure of anything, but by most reports, the PSTwo will be in absolute full availability sometime in April and it won't be an issue anymore. You do make a good point about PSP vs PS2. Certainly, we've seen a slight decline in Japan for the PS2, which could support the argument, but Japan and US are so different that I don't think they're all that related.

Look at it this way. If you've held off for 4 1/2 years to get a PS2, you're going to buy a much more expensive PSP in it's first few months? I don't think so. The PS2 buyer now is the mainstream and value conscious buyer, the PSP buyer for the first year will be the hardcore, the gadget freaks, and those with disposable income.

This argument works just as well for GBA though.. I don't really think PSP's going to impact either platform much directly. DS might start eating into GBA sales though if Nintendo drops the price.... which they'll probably only do if PSP drops.

2) The GC did outsell the XBox for 2003 and had "as Reggie said", momentum, but 2004 was simply disastrous for them in worldwide sales.

The GC didnt have momentum when he said that. Saying it in January right after the holidays: true statement. Saying it in May at E3: very false statement.

Xbox 360's impact will be mostly in terms of eating media attention rather than sales thanks to limited supply. Just like DS last year, I don't really expect it to impact the current market directy over the holidays. Xbox though, is going to take a huge tumble, thanks mainly to MS phasing out the platform early. A price drop might see some DC style firesales, but MS won't be restocking so I doubt significant numbers in the end.

GameCube really rests on Zelda like you mentioned. It's got a solid Nintendo centric lineup throughout the year though, and Nintendo's not giving up shelf space for it's successor yet, so it'll probably do comparable to this year overall. I doubt there's a price drop, but there'll be some bundle deals probably.

PS2's a wildcard. It really depends on supply and pricing this year, I could see a drop to even $99 to take attention away from the new Xbox. PS2 also has the best software lineup for the year I'd say all around... if I had to guess console sales for the year, I'd say...

PlayStation 2~ 6-8M
Xbox~ 2-3M
GameCube~ 2-3M
Xbox 360~ 1-2M

..the handhelds are a bit harder to gauge right now, with PSP supply/price issues, DS software issues and a new GB potentially this year. We'll know better around E3.

hey sonycowboy, thanks for keeping these lists (this one + over 500k list), what would GAF be without sales numbers :D

See my post above. Microsoft & Nintendo both sell "Manufacturer refurbished" console systems to stores (shrinkwrapped and in an official box and everything) whereas Sony does not

Sony does also

or well they used to

hwo do I know this because I used to sell them

Sony shipped out refurbished PS2's to gamestop all the time they come in a white box

they probably arent around any more because sony wanted to bleed the inventories of the older model PS2's, and the PSTwo hasnt been out long enough to really have a large number of manufacturer refurbished systems

Sony also used to sell refurbished PSones and Nintendo did have refurbished GBA's but not SPs that I ever saw

and yes they were official from Sony, they came with the same paperwork and warranty that a brand new one would from Sony
