I want to be able to display japanese and chinese file names in their proper character sets instead of a buch of garbled characters. other programs like word, msn, ie/ffox display asian languages fine, but not windows explorer. please advise. it's for winxp, which shouldn't be hard, but i just can't seem to figure it out.

Control Panel -> Regional And Language Options

Languages Tab > Install Files for East Asian Languages

Dunno if that'll work, but I just did a quick google.

Should work, but you may also need to set the "Language for non-Unicode programs" drop-down menu (under the Advanced tab of Regional and Language Options) to Japanese as well (once you've installed East Asian Language support). It'll let you run Japanese applications on XP with proper Japanese text-display as well.
