computer issue powers on but no display

This has been an on going problem and I'll explain the best I can

Upon restarting or powering on this issue has been occurring for atleast 4 months.

Clock is rest 90 percent of the time.

Won't go into sleep mode when I close the laptop

Upon restarting or powering on, the screen won't come on 90 percent of the time. Trying 3 or 4 times has resulted in the screen always coming in.

When i say the screen doesn't come it seems to have nothing at all. But the power light and fans run as normal.

While in the last 4 months, the screen did eventually always come on but during the last 24 hours I have been un able to get the screen to show anything.

Sometimes on starting up it has had the fan Rev up and down over and over. Until I kill power and try again.

It was working yesterday evening as usual, something wasn't working and I did a restart. It seems to have hung up in the process. Screen just won't come in.

I never have the screen stop working when it actually does work. Only happens on restarts or powering on sometimes.

I am low on hdd space maybe near 0. Maybe has something to do with it.

So, I'm asking if there are any simple fixes to try.. Without taking it for a repair? I think the fix could be easy, I'm in china and I don't want a miscommunication issue...

Thanks guys, any questions or tips I'm hopeful. It always worked before. I don't hear or see any differences from my previous use. Just the screen not coming on.

UPDATE

Alright guys I have my my computer back and working for now

I don' know if I would classify this issue as a motherboard issue but probably.

The guy who fixed it is Chinese and I couldn't really ask him what he did but he replaced a part that my friend translated as 'bridge connector " or "core logic chip set"

I don't know what that is actually, and if anyone knows the actual name in English if that is wrong you can let me know.

I added 2gb of ram to go ram 4 to 6 as well and I do play to by a new pc and keep this one as a back up for use until it craps out on me even more..

So, maybe some of you that work and fix pc's can explain this and why it gave me the issues I had..

He said the battery was good for the clock btw

I don't think you're gonna find an easy solution. Try reinstalling windows, but this reads like hardware failure to me. It might be dying memory, which is a fairly cheap fix. Try memtest.

Maybe memory issue? So try replacing the ram first? What keeps the clock up to date? a small battery or ram? Mine always gets reset

For now I can't do much since the screen just won't come up. I'll get the memory replaced if that's a decent solution to try

Sounds like a motherboard issue to me, can't be easily fixed if that's the case. Try running a memory test first though.

So a computer repair guy will be needed. You guys are still helpful so atleast I have an idea what to tell my friend to translate.

I use my computer everyday as well, had a couple of breaks where the power plugs in and had to get that repaired. No telling how they fixed it here though.

Before you call a repairman, what software are you using for power management? Have you tried updating or reinstalling it?
Or updating your BIOS?

Edit: Just saw this:

What do you mean by breaks?

My laptop, the little metal box where you plug on the power came loose and broke before. Or had to be reconnected. The plastic around this area, on the top left corner broke on the outside of the laptop and was why the power block piece came loose inside.. Just the little piece that is the size of a pinky. They connected that piece back, and glued the plastic corner.

Since one of you said a possible board issue, just considering that.

External display is a good idea, I doubt it's a screen issue if it's occasionally boot-looping, but it's worth trying all the free options.

If you can't make a windows disc without your computer, a rooted android device with DriveDroid can boot a windows ISO, or a memtest ISO. Good luck!

You don't have a TV with a compatible connector or know someone who does?
I don't have the cord. Think this tv here doesn't have enough it as well.

If I do happen to get it on. What should I do? Go to the bios?

I am low on money but I use it everyday for many things so I have to get it working either way.

If you get it on, make a windows disc ASAP.

Is there any hard drive noise? Clicking or grinding? That could explain the slow death you describe, and a hard drive can be (Temporarily) revived by freezing it. That's usually a final death for the drive, though, so don't do it on a hunch.

Hmm, no bad sounds. Sounds of the pc and the fan only.no abnormal sounds. My hdd is full and usually when I'm using It I get memory write issues my hdd is over full. I have ever deleted things quite often but I keep running into memory issues. I guess or felt this had something to do with it but I don't feel that explains the resetting clock

I am not too worried as I got most of the most important things backed up. Names passwords and my art project. Just I'd lose everything else from some photos games and random programs I need that could be hard to get again.

Sometimes when I turn it on the fan kicks in loud then back down to quite very fast and stays on. Not sure if that's normal. But the fan usually stays in its 30 percent sound range. Which is enough to hear but not loud.

Well, your hard drive sounds fine then, and that means your data is ultimately fine as well, if temporarily inaccessible.
Thanks for the ideas,I guess not a whole lot anyone can do. Just seems like a strange issue.... Just not sure what is causing it. Hopefully it's just a simple fix. Feels bad here without my pc and ease of work, gaf and taking. Appreciate any suggestions as to the cause though. It does feel like some sort of memory issue or eh I don't know... Lol.

I'll update this down the road if anyone is interested.

To think of u had not restarted it I would have expected been using it fine yesterday but saying that is a fix but it has been very odd working and not working the last few months. Just never happened for this long like I was saying.

Do you have any external HDDs attached? Sometimes my PC has a similar issue and fixes itself when I remove them.

Any device with storage ports on it can cause this, like a printer with a SD card slot.
Well, I know of this issue. I often charge my phones a day controllers so I learned to unplug those a while ago. Thanks for the tip though. One time this happened and I was just like... Why..... And then I figured it out lol.

And the cmos battery. Maybe? But no idea. Would that be something to replace first? I would say 2 percent of the time my clock doesn't get reset.

So would it be fair To try the battery first, then ran?

My actual power battery for the whole laptop has been bad for a while. Years... But I assume that shoukdnt affect it since you can use it with the battery out.

That is what I was wondering though.. Could the cmos battery be affecting the startup of the screen somehow. Now that someone mentions why the clock is resetting.

I'd say your motherboard is about to die.

My previous computer had the same problem. At first my computer would sometimes not turn on (well, it turns on but nothing appears on the screen). Power off - power on would help at first.

Then over time it would take more and more restarts to make anything happen. At first I would need to boot it up two or three times. In the end I would need to boot over 10 times. Sometimes nearly 20 times, but it would eventually work. Finally no amount of boots would do anything. Sent the computer to repair and was told the motherboard was dead.

Before I started to have booting problems, my computer would not be able to activate from hibernation/sleep mode. I think that was the first sign.

Now, this might not be the issue in your case but the syptoms sound eerily similar to what happened to me.

Ok, I'll let the repair person know. This is a worse scenario as far as time... But should be fixable as far as I know?

Shouldn't be more than a hundred dollars to replace the motherboard? I really need to just buy a new laptop but maybe I can't stretch for that price right now.

Not sure but the sleep mode issue has been there for a while for sure...

Pretty dusty air here and we'll I don't know what makes motherboards go bad but my keyboard got messed up two years ago from water

Would make sense.

you need to trouble shoot through the process of elimination. this obviously requires many different hardware configurations and spare parts.
Yes I'm trying to think of how to do this. I will be going to a guy who speaks no English and getting.translation over to them is a real pain..

I will try to tell them the issue best I can.. Or my friend that translates..

You guys suggest I say

Memory test
Replace cmos battery
Ram and
Finally motherboard if it comes to that?

I need to prepare my friend and try to get translation for it before I go. I'm sure they are good with computers but you can imagine the issues...

I was lucky to have warranty left so I didn't have to pay for it.

If the problem really is in the motherboard and they can fix it quickly, I think you could get it done with hundred dollars. Depends on the motherboard too. Some are cheap, some are not.

Anyways, my problems were fixed by changing the motherboard. After that I had paranoid feelings for quite a long time every time I turned the computer on. Every time the computer would take even a few seconds longer to show anything, I would think it's broken again, but every time I would have a nice sense of relief when it would eventually start up.

And really, I'm not an expert on computer hardware so there could be some other reason for your problem, but this is what happened to me and hopefully it helps the repair person in detecting the problem.

EDIT:
btw, my computer was not a laptop, but a desktop computer

Ok thanks for the info buddy.
I'll try those things in.the best order I can.

I'll try those steps in the order I listed... But if anyone has suggestions for testing that my list shows wrong please let me know. I'm not a big computer guy so I just had enough to listen to those who do the work

It's been very helpful though and I got a lot of info. Thanks a ton guys.
