Computer turns itself off after a few seconds...

OK, so I just upgraded my PC - new mobo, new CPU, new RAM, new HD, pretty much NEW everything. Hell, I even bought a new case and PSU. Now my problem is that although I've got it all together, it turns itself off after a few seconds, and it is REALLY fucking me off, 'cos I want this shit to work. The weird thing is, for awhile it DID work, but then I went to install the CD drive and it got all fucked again.

If anyone could help me with this, I would be eternally grateful.
 
overheating... just had this problem... check how your fan is mounted and check the bios to see what the temp is...
 
I can't even get to the BIOS though, and the case is off and there's a heatsink, a CPU fan and a case fan running. The CPU fan/heatsink instructions said I was supposed to put some paste or something below it but there was none included and there was already some sticky shit there so I didn't bother. Should I have done something about this?

The fan/heatsink is a fucking monster too, seriously. When did all that stuff get so BIG? My old computer had this poxy-ass CPU fan (covered in dust) and no case fan and it worked like a charm.

well the paste would make your computer work.... the heat sink is worthless without it..
 
So I have to buy this shit, disassemble everything and reassemble it? Shit.

No problem.. if you don't have enough time to get into your bios.. your chip might be assed... just thought I'd pass on the good news to you now...
 
That's the thing though, when it didn't work, then it worked, and now it doesn't work, which leads me to hope that it isn't a permanent thing.

well it is hard to say with overheating... mine did the same thing.. after my fan unmounted itself..which happened right after a big earthquake here... but I had enough time to get into the bios to check the temp... which means it was over heating slowly.. yours sounds like it is cooking if you can't get to the post..
 
You don't need the paste, every computer I've ever put together I did just with what came with the CPU, never used any paste. Unless you're trying to overclock the CPU, but you didn't mention that.

My guess is it might be a bad Power Supply. Maybe it's broken or maybe you didn't get one with enough watts.
 
Beeps, yeah, just the starting one (which I think is normal).

RE: PSU, it's a 300W one, to power a 2300+ AMD chip, with onboard everything and a hard drive.
 
Don't be cheap. Get some Arctic Silver or whatever. You cpu will last a lot longer, and that is probably why your pc is crashing after a few seconds.
 
That pink shit that comes on stock heatsink should work just fine unless u plan on overclocking. Just hope u peeled off the plastic.

I would spend the extra $8 bucks to know that my cpu is being properly cooled. If it was me I would also throw out the trashy stock heatsink and get a new one.

Amen... it is a over heating problem... I pretty much promise you that... in my exp bad mem works sometimes... seems like it is crashing pretty regularly
 
blackace is right, it's overheating. don't take any chances, just buy the damn paste. that 8 dollars can save you a lot of heartache. Unless you did something totally retarded, this seems like the only logical reason unless you're not telling us something about your components or psu. But I think it's overheating as well.
 
Hmm.. well the graphics don't sound like they'd be over heating anything. I still don't understand why everyone is saying ditch the original heat sink and add some paste. As long as what came with the CPU was installed correctly, it shouldnÂ’t be over heating and in need of a better heat sink/paste. They don't send out CPUs with insufficient cooling mechanisms.

It could be an over-heating CPU, but that's not the first thing I'd be looking at. Bad PSU, bad RAM, incorrectly installed anything, then maybe an overheating CPU.

well over heating could be caused by the heat sink not mounted correctly as well.. and why wouldn't you use paste for your 1000 dollar investment?

Plus it is an AMD which are known to be hot...
 
I'm not saying that he shouldn't use paste, I'm just saying it's not required for the CPU to run as it was intended to do. It should not be over heating just because he didn't use the paste.

well it really sounds like an over heating problem to me.. like i said bad mem will boot most the time.. unless it is truely dead ram.. and even at that you should be able to get into your bios before it actually starts to use the RAM... but it could be anything... computers are funny beast... I would get some paste and remount my heat sink first.. then start looking into the other stuff... if that doesn't solve the problem...

Well, actually it was a $200 investment. :lol This is just a secondary machine, all it will do is run Ubuntu and be used for web browsing and word processing. I mounted the heatsink by using the clips on either side, and it seems secure. I don't suppose there's anymore to it than that.

I just disassembled and reassembled everything - still no joy.
