I have four external hard drives on my Win XP Home machine, all hooked up at the same time via separate USB ports. I am constantly getting write errors or having one or more drives disappear from Windows. It isn't the same drive all the time that gets errors or disappears, it happens to every drive. Been happening more and more frequently to the point now where it happens about every 2 hours if one of the drives are in use. To put it mildly, it is irritating the living fucking shit out of me.

I had SP2, read that this is a common problem with SP2, so I called Microsoft and they sent me a hotfix. Installed it, didn't work. Maxtor knowledge base link

So then I uninstalled SP2 via the Add/Remove Programs feature. My Computer says I'm running SP1 now, but still, didn't work.

Today I called Maxtor and they suggested I delete all my USB drivers, reboot my machine and let Windows rebuild the drivers. Did that, didn't work.

I have run various diagnostics on all four drives. They all come back as healthy.

The last thing I can possibly think of is I have changed all these drive letters via Disk Management. My various memory card readers were originally given drive leters F, G, H, and I, so in Disk Management I made those W-Z and my hard drives F-I. Could this be a problem?

Sweet shit this is driving me up the fuckin' wall. Several times a day I have to fix this. Thanks in advance.

I don't think the drive letters are the problem. See if you have any conflicts for the IRQ's, that's the only thing I could think of. Annoyances.org might be able to help you also.
