UPDATE: Staying Nightly.

Interview with TBS President at THR

TBS has no immediate plans to tweak late-night staple Conan.

Despite news reports claiming that the Turner-owned cable network planned to shift Conan O'Brien's daily late-night show to a weekly format, TBS executives stress that there are no plans to do so at this time.

"Conan remains an invaluable franchise, partner and producer for our TBS brand and we'll be in business with him for a long time," TBS president Kevin Reilly said in a statement. "As the media landscape continues to evolve, Conan will continue to lead the evolution of what a talk show will be in the digital age. At this time, we have no plans to change the format or frequency of his popular TBS show. In addition to Conan's daily responsibilities to his talk show, we continue to have very ambitious plans that will further broaden and evolve our relationship with Conan."

Can a mod update the title?

I wonder if the success of Last Week Tonight also played into this? Conan is the only nightly traditional talk show that I find compelling, but I also think the road shows are the best episodes they make by far, so I'm split on this.

This is for the best, though I imagine they'll have to cut some staff (who Conan has a history of being good to, so I imagine that aspect is a bummer for him).

If it means he's doing more road shows then I am in. This might actually be a really cool opportunity to mix up the format and do something really unique with it.

This might be a great idea actually. It would give them more time for remotes. I always love watching those on youtube. His trip to South Korea was fantastic.

if Conan never interviews another celebrity ever and just does his weird comedy thing than more power to him.

not that he's bad at being a talk show host, but he's much, much better at just comedy in general.

I'm a little sad that they're scaling back Conan, but I only really watched one episode a week anyways. Most of the time I watch the clips on YouTube.

Make Conan great again.

Yep. I really can't stand his celebrity interviews and his format could be so much better.

I used to watch Conan a lot but I couldn't bother to keep up with the show daily. If he does one quality a show a week I may jump back in. Especially if he does more remotes.

this fucking sucks. i watch conan every night, he's like the nightcap to my day. he's really sort of the last vestige of the traditional, carson/letterman style hosts. i can imagine he doesn't want to work as much, but a lot of the reason he did the show was for his staff and band. hopefully it still retains his fun irreverence.

Too much stuff to watch, idk how people keep up with hockey let alone shows like this, and be able to watch anything else ever.

I feel like an idiot, I had no idea he even had a show on TBS. I used to love Conan on NBC and never really followed his career after he got booted off the Tonight Show.

I thought all the Clueless Gamer stuff was just him doing web videos for like Funny or Die or College Humor or one of those big comedy sites.

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
I would have preferred they just ease back a little. Tightening up isn't a bad idea but Conan is one instance where 1 show a week might be limiting. I'd rather see them go to a 2-3 episode a week format, like the deal Chelsea Handler got with Netflix

Seems like with YouTube there's not a need to watch a full late night show. John Oliver, Jimmy Fallon, Conan all post their best stuff on YouTube in nice consumable segments.

get some go again
i hope conan ditches the interviews or just has 1 short interview per show. i want more comedy segments than boring interviews.

Man, this is huge news. Conan has had a nightly show for 20 years now. I'm really going to miss the nightly format. He suited it so well.

Craig Ferguson's late night show should've had that. By the end he seemed really tired and out of ideas for daily episodes.

I'll miss having more episodes because some of Conan's funniest moments are the dumbest ones. Its hard to imagine Bulletproof Legs making it to air in a world where they don't have a ton of time to fill.

Hoping for the best though!

I mean he's being doing it weekly for almost a quarter century now right? I'm 32 and remember watching Conan during sleepovers in GRADE school.

I don't have cable but recently started watching his stuff on YouTube. He's still the best.

not sure if the new show will just be the regular show once a week, or if he comes up with an entirely new format. I always thought it would be cool if he tried something new.

Cross posting from OT but Brilliant brilliant move if they pull this off.

This takes him from being a "Ah, he's on five days a week...I'll can catch him on anytime" to "shit, Conan's on tonight...must not miss".

Secondly, this drives focus and we all know where that should be. He can turn a 15 min segment with Kev Hart and Cube into an hour long episode and people can spend the next 6 days talking and laughing about it.

Additionally, he can turn his travels into specials. Really i see him making this really work ala The Grand Tour. Frankly, I thought for sure this is where Craig Ferguson was heading in his last two years on the show (Paris, Scotland....)

He would probably rather do a nightly show, but I think that this could be great for him and the show.

He's still by far the best late night host imo.
