Craziest jump in a game?

ATV Offroad Fury 2. In one of the levels if you run into a cactus it sends you hundreds of fett into the air.

Can someone explain this one? Looks pretty straightforward to me ;)

Well, you can't make either of those jumps unless you are running at full speed... which means you have to make a long jump, land precisely on the middle point, then jump again before you lose momentum. The problem is that it's easy to overjump the middle.

SMB3 had some nice jumps, but I can't think of a specific one at the moment.

I see. I don't think I could do that. I assume you'll want to be grabbing those coins, too.

Yeah, a lot of new people discovered videogames and became fans. How terrible.

I'm not against newcomers, it's just that they think that gaming began with Halo and revolves around it. It's a little annoying when discussing "all-time" gaming topics.

ATV Offroad Fury has some of the best jaw dropping jumps i have ever witnessed, not to mention the impact of the landings!! Ouch...but still funny as shit!

wtf, have you never played Mario Bros?

Don't think so. My first real recollection of Mario was Super Mario World on SNES.

I've got some of the older Mario's on GBA but never really bothered to play them. I think there's like 2 or 3 of them but frankly speaking I never played them enough to differentiate.

what???

EDIT: to stay on topic, it's not really a jump, but back when mario 64 came out I used to spend my time launching from a cannon with the wing cap and doing stunts while flying

also, I'm surprised no one mentioned any cucco flying moments

I had never played mario 3 properly till recently, bought it on GBA and I'm beating it for the second time over. I can see myself beating it at least 4 times or until I can do it on 1 credit, whichever comes first.

also, CVXFREAK your FAQ was helpful, I got the coinship using that. some awesome secrets in that game. I want to get the first one again now.

It's not really a "jump", but in games by Rainbow Studios (Motocross Madness, ATV Offroad Fury, Splashdown), when you get to the edge of the map in free roaming mode, the game rockets you back to the middle of the map. In Splashdown, a giant squid throws you. It's quite a flight.

mario sunshine was pretty neat on noki bay, climing to the top and diving off. before you start doing it by accident that is. the water is just so cool in that game.

That reminds me of Waverace 64, I think it's the fortress course or whatever they called it. When you race it in reverse, right at the beginning if you smack a wave head-on at just the right time you can go flying and *I think* cut the 1st corner.

Yeah, it's one thing to love Halo, it's another to claim it's the best game ever when you've never played anything else.

It's like discussing all-time greatest rock bands, someone says the Beatles, and someone else says "who?".

Same goes for Zelda OoT. But....whoops, you probably think it is the greatest game of all time.

Halo is good, get the fuck over it.

OoT jumping off the bridge right after staring at the huge waterfall

Strider(Arcade, Genesis) 2nd level snow cliff jump was pretty sweet back in the day.

One of the Rush games on N64 had this mode where you would jump the cars off all kinds of geometric shapes and try to get the most flips/spins before landing. And then there is SSX.

Morrowind, when you use super jump magic somehow.

Super Metroid - shinespark.

Legend of Kay - played it today so that's why I remembered. You can hit an enemy in midair, and then dash over to the next one to strike, and continue doing this across huge distances.

Yeah, it may not be the biggest jump, but it WAS the first time in gaming history you could catch air off of a wave (in 3D, at least). Hell, it's still one of the very few times you can--water may look nice these days, but water physics still bite big time. Bring on the next gen!! More water!!

Haha, have you ever done that outside the castle, fly as high as you possibly can until your cap runs out? Then try to land on the tip of the castle so it looks like you get impaled by the sick at the top. Someone made a video of that years back, it was some funny shit.

The final (non-boss) level of Shinobi 3, where you have to dash-double-jump between platforms that are one character-width wide and start to sink when you touch them. Oh, and touching the ceiling kills you. With practice it's not that hard, but it's certainly crazy.

Take a mountain bike from the top of Mt Chilliad and ride off. The rush is insane, amazing for a videogame.

edit - though the longest I've seen/done would be in Road Rash 2 with the super bike. Half the stage. :lol

Thanks, heard good things about it but I'm more of a console gamer. My PC's about the same as yours so I'm gonna check it out.

Buy this game....NOW

I swear, with the introduction of the Halo franchise we gained a TON of gamers that don't quite realize that gaming began decades ago...

What a bitchy thing to say.

I've been playing games since the 2600 and I still think the warthog jump was one of the most impressive things I'd seen in a game

Mario Sunshine, at Loki Bay. I love climbing to the highest spot on the map, and DIVING OFF INTO THE WATER! omf.g
Heck yes, climb to the top of that tree all the way at the top, then do a spin jump into a rocket boost off the side! You fall sooooooo far!

This jump alone shows why Mario is so terrifying and yet so fucking brilliant at the same time. I lived in fear of this jump and a few others like it during that game. But man you feel good when you breeze past it. That you have developed yourself to a point where it is effortless. Just beautiful design, simplicity at its finest.

The desert stage with the sun. I don't quite remember what caused it, maybe it was a ramp, but one jump in the game would send you over the game screen for a long time (10 seconds maybe?). This was as regular non-flying Mario btw.

The jump from the top coral in Noki Bay could be made much higher by using the rocket nozzle OR going to another point on the stage nearly as high as the coral with a tree + spring board + rocket nozzle.

SF Rush had fun jumps. That hidden Alcatraz stage was pretty good as well with huge loop ramps.

That was the part with the crazy bubbly tornado in the middle of the stage. When you timed the jump right it sent you flying for a long time on your own. Just be careful on the decent and not land on the sun.

Agreed and the best response. I also loved San Andreas' jump from the top of the mountain. One of the most fun times I had searching for a high place and jumping off. Last time I remember that was playing Twisted Metal 2 back on PSX in New York. One part you could fly off and catch the code to unlock sweet tooth. So those 3 are my most memorable.

Realistic Answer: The car park in GTA3, where you can drive all the way to the roof to find a sports car + nicely position ramp aimmed towards the sky.

Proper Answer: The cliffs in MGS3. That's an insane jump if there ever was one.

I always loved the jump in Crazy Taxi as you take a shortcut through the U-turn at the Train Station. So you pass KFC, go up the hill past the church, and follow the road till you see the station and the divider on the left dissappears allowing you to jump down, and then you can head to the stadium.

I mentioned it in another topic, why did I forget to mention it here?

Sly 2, in one of the very final missions you have to play,
just for one single mission, you get a Super Jump pack. It's almost like a Game Shark "Moon Jump" code built-in, it's so extreme that it's not usually the type of things developers reward you with, and it was just so freeing to have that tiny segment of platforming be so unrestricted by your standard abilities. It was so painful when it was ripped away from you right afterward, and you're just left with this permanent gap in your inventory screen.

That jump is nothing compared to the lost levels. I remember in lost levels there's a jump like that..... but there's one part where it's impossible to jump over... and you have to ricochet off of 3 flying turtles to clear it.

Yeah, arcade Super Mario Bros has a couple of levels the home version doesn't, as well. 6-3 had a jump that couldn't be done without hitting a flying koopa, and it ended with a heart-stopping just-shy-of-maximum-distance triple jump off of single blocks to the flag.

late in one of the race levels in jet set radio -- i think against the fat kid in the green hoodie -- you jump from a high railing to a much lower railing, at speed. it's one of my favorite gaming moments. so it's a little disturbing that i can't remember it in more detail. :/
