Ok curious about messing with this Blog stuff...looks not too complicated...

Or is it?

If I have my own domain, how to I do a Blog on my site? Software? or is it just coding?

Tips anyone?

imo, start with Blogger. and if you're comfy with that, move on to Movable Type or something which offers more flexibility and control.

Yeah work with blogger. Probably Podcasts are the way to go but, they seem even to pretentious for me.

And they are. I was just joking. Nothing deflates my interest in a topic more than hearing two whiny losers debate about it.

Software. I've used most of the "big" programs and now use Wordpress for all my sites. Super easy to install and much faster than anything else I've tried. You need a MYSQL database (you will for Moveable Type as well) and the ability to run PHP. Nothing too difficult.

:lol

Ha that is kinda funny. I mean I "blog" but my reason is because it's easier to anwser the same question once on a webpage that everyone can get to as opposed to 50 times in 50 seperate emails.

I may dabble in Podcasting for a second just so I can be familar with the technology. But, I'm not pressed by blogging one way or the other. I can't wait in about 10 years or so when blogs, forums, and podcasts start raping our future politicans.

I concur; Blogger is definitely the way to go if you're starting out and look confused when somebody mentions CSS or PHP to you. Blogger even supports redirecting last time I used it, so if you have a domain you're good to go.

I used blogger for about six months, ripped apart the modified css to figure out what the hell I needed to do, and then started using Movable type, which has been great for all of my needs (and provides the much needed category features that Blogger does not). Standalone web software is great but administration can be a pain when you just want to type and post. :)

I'm sure wordpress is fine but it always depends on what you need; there are a few specific MT plugins I need that I never did see on other apps back when I was researching what to go with.

My website, for the sake of reference.

I've set people up with MT before, but have never worked with WordPress. A lot of people recommend it though; what does it offer/how is it better?

Wordpress has a couple of things I likeover MT:

It's faster rendering pages.
More useful features (such as pages, a better template editor, themes).
Smaller in disk size.
It's also nice that almost all the big plugin writers abandonded MT and went to Wordpress after MT announced their pricing structure last year, this gave Wordpress a lot of good plugins quickly.
Both support forums are great, so it's a tie there.

I just really prefer the admin interface and the way tags are handled with WP over MT. It's personal preference.

Both are good systems, but if you are NEW to blogs - neither one should be recommended over something 'newbie-ized' like Blogger as Blogger requires no cost, no setup, and enough hand holding to get you started.

I agree w/ the Blogger recommendations. It's very easy to get started. In fact, I still use it at my personal site (Blogger can publish HTML files to your host), though I use WordPress at a group blog I run and I desperately want to switch my personal site over to WordPress as well.

WordPress kicks all kinds of ass. But for newbies, go Blogger for simplicity.

Also, isn't MovableType not free anymore? That gives WordPress an edge right away. Great plugins are available too.

MovableType for personal use (with no support) is still free. I found MT easier to start with than Wordpress. It just seemed more intuitive to me.

I've never used Blogger, but if you're just starting to dabble, it seems like the way to go.

Is it possible to run Movable Type offline on your harddrive, if you want to create a test page, etc? I'd like to try this but am a total dunce with the tech. Any help?
