Watched the first 3 'episodes' wtf?

I picked up the dvd cause it was 20 flat at suncoast which is the usual first dvd hook line n sinker. Not to say its bad, but does it get better? I love freddie mercury as much as the next guy but jeeze.

Cromartie has been on my list for a while now. The dubbed episode on amazon really gave it a bad vibe. I know it's just the dub though and will check it out eventually.

The manga is better. Read that instead, unless you hate manga or something. I love the comic, but after seeing an episode of the show on the Newtype USA sampler disc, and was highly disappointed -- it barely builds on the comic at all, and it's hardly even animated, despite being A CARTOON.

Man, you guys.

It does all that shit on purpose. There's even a part where the guy is like, "what the hell, this is a cartoon? It's barely been animated!"

The dub is so bad that it's good, also imo.

If you can appreciate other things of that nature (ie, Evil Dead trilogy), you can appreciate Cromartie. Humming episode rules, and the fat guy that gets motion sickness > *

Yes, the parts I saw had them complain about the poor animation, but that doesn't really make a difference. Just because the creators are self-aware to realize something isn't working doesn't automatically excuse it -- quite the opposite, in fact, as having the characters themselves complain about something within a work, whether it's the shoddy quality of the film/animation/prose, nonsensical characterization, or gaping plot holes, is basically tantamount to admitting defeat rather than fixing the problem.

How about it's an indication they aren't taking themselves seriously... which for a show like cromartie is already a given.

Granted, the animation is minimal, but let's face it - you're not watching Cromartie for the animation quality, you're watching it for the non-sequiter weirdness. Hell, it's based on 4-panel gag strip manga. Lavish animation would be nice, but it's almost irrelevant as far as your enjoyment of the show goes. Either you'll dig on the absurdist humor or you won't.

MAF, if these episodes weren't grabbing you, I dunno how much you'll dig on the later episodes. On the one hand, Cromartie does tend to become more amusing the more you see it, but on the other hand if the humming episode hasn't done it for you, you probably won't be really into the rest of the series.

I thought the humming episode was dumb, but I highly enjoy the rest of the series.

I also think this is one of those shows where the dub's the only way to go if you are a native English speaker. It's very well done and much funnier than reading subtitles.

As I said earlier in the thread, I do dig on it ... in the manga, which is neck and neck with Sgt. Frog for the funniest comic I've been reading lately.

The point is that if you're going to animate something, animate it or leave it alone. Azumanga Daioh, also based on 4-panel gag strip manga (which Cromartie isn't, by the way; its stories are short but always get more than 4 panels) is a great comedy in both print and cartoon form, precisely because they did more with the cartoon than take setups and art from the manga and slap voice acting on top of it. I can get Cromartie's non-sequitir weirdness in either form, so yes, I am watching the show for the animation quality and other aspects unique to the cartoon.

My post to this thread wasn't to hate on Cromartie in general, which is awesome. It was to let MAF know that if he's not enjoying the show, he should consider switching to the comic.
