Fortunately the ship was reasonable close to the shore or things might have been far worse.

I suppose for the passengers on board, events must have felt like they were onboard the Titanic. The passenger quote below is from the Telegraph.

"It was just like something out of the Titanic," one woman said. "You could tell straight away that the ship had hit something and no way was it an electrical fault.'

I'm confused, how did people die? It sounds like some people did jump into the water to swim 400 meters (wtf?) through the ocean to get to land.

But it doesn't sound like the boat actually sunk yet since it's basically stuck in shallow water.

Video in the link said some of the bailers drowned.

The problem is that the ship is on the ground.

I believe the article mentioned parts of the ship are below water. Maybe those people drowned?

Edit: PounchEnvy answered.

The Concordia apparently hit some undersea rocks while coasting the Tuscan islands and started taking on water from a gash in the left side. The captain understood that his ship was in danger of sinking so he decided to bring it closer in toward the island of Giglio so it would settle down near the shore rather than sink in the open sea. The major inclination occurred as the ship settled in the low water near the island's port entrance.

Ughh I dunno but that picture makes me feel very uncomfortable... hopefully everything turns out alright.

Looking at various sources such as the BBC gave me this info!

30m hole in the side of the ship.
Happened when passengers were having dinner. Some descriptions included a loud groaning noise followed by electrical failure and then the ship started to lean 20 degrees.
4 dead bodies found in the water, more feared to be dead

There's a picture on Twitter somewhere of it leaning, it's took at night so obvious hours before the above picture.

Holy crap, that's insane. You would have thought that these people would know better when it comes to navigating in shallow waters, yet there are still accidents like this.

Costa's going to have a hard time getting over this, especially in the Mediterranean where there are plenty of big cruise lines.

RIP to the deceased.

I don't see how you would die in such a scenario though. Maybe if you were old / out of shape / incapacitated.

So how do you get the ship upright again?
Patch the gash, pump some water out, and pull it upright with tugboats?

Seems the hatches and windows on the underwater side would have to be closed as well.

How much weight would the tugboats be pulling against?

Or do you just scrap it and take it apart where it lies?

Apparently there are 3 bodies recovered. Well ... they must have been old if they couldn't save themselves in that situation. At least they died on vacation, a good way to go.

I was thinking this too.

Sad there are some casualties.

Looks really small, but it's bigger than the Titanic?

Titanic was topped a year after it was built.

This ship is around the size of the Grand Princess

Drowning is never a good way to go.

well that's already pretty funny

Yes, hilarious. -_- The fuck is wrong with you?

Anyway, the picture is scary as shit. That's exactly the kind of shit I feared when I went on a cruise a few years ago (not a fan of boats). I was told they had some huge ass weights on the bottom of the ship to prevent this kind of thing, though.

EDIT: It's interesting that the article states that they weren't given instructions on how to evacuate the ship. They had us go through that drill within the first few hours of the cruise.

The news report said "we don't yet know how it ran aground", well considering it's almost touching the fucking beach in the pics I have a pretty good idea.

Holy crap. Tragic they lost six people, but honestly, they are lucky as hell if that's all they end up losing. I've done some promotional photography for a couple cruise lines, so I've been on more than my share of boats, and from what I've seen, usually those cruise ships are full of elderly people, many in wheelchairs or using walkers. That would be a very bad situation for someone with that kind of mobility issue.

"It was just like something out of the Titanic," one woman said. "You could tell straight away that the ship had hit something and no way was it an electrical fault.'

Yeah. I'd imagine the sudden stopping was the first clue it wasn't an electrical fault.
