From the frozen kingdoms of Scandinavia, Paradox development studio brings us Charlemagne, the newest expansion to 2012's dynastic strategy game. This new expansion adds a new eighth-century start date, during a time in which tribal rulers were carving out kingdoms across Europe, and the Islamic world was united under the great Abbasid Caliphs.

The DLC transforms the gameplay of Crusader Kings by adding seasons, appointable viceroys, player-created kingdoms and empires, the eighth century start date, and half a dozen new cultures, and hundreds of playable characters. The existing regency, decadence, tribalism, and centralization mechanics have all been overhauled, drastically changing the gameplay experience for the better.

Now, go! Shed the blood of the Saxon men! Crusader Kings 2: Charlemagne is $15 on Steam.

Interesting. Might as well add that other micro DLCs have been released alongside the Charlemagne expansion: Early Western Clothing Pack, Early Eastern Clothing Pack, Dynasty Shields Charlemagne, and an Ebook: The Songs of Roland. They're all USD$1.99 or your regional equivalent.

Now, does anyone know precisely which features were patched in, vs. which are coming from the DLC? Because the Steam store page highlights the story-driven nature of this DLC in a way that makes it sound... well, less interesting than other xpacs, and aside from that and the start date there doesn't seem much there.

Also, a final tip: I think GMG with a -25% code **P65PWG-F9B91D-TW2AG2** (assuming it works with the newly-released DLC) will be the cheapest you can get it right now. It's a Steam key.

Just in time for me to start a new game after my CKII-imported save into EUIV ended in a French revolutionary empire that stretched from middle Germany to the western reaches of Spain.

Hmm... who to pick...

Try the tiny Zunist state! It's its own religion in eastern Iran, nearly as doomed as Zoroastrianism. But if you play your cards right, you can convert all of Iran to Zunism, which is based around an ancient Indo-European sun diety.

This guy, Arumba, usually has pretty good videos of CK and UA. Haven't watched his videos of this DLC, but I'd imagine he will make use of the new mechanics and offer his opinion.
