So I was in Best Buy the other day, and I see this:

It's a portable dvd player thats slightly larger than the GBA SP and it plays 3.5" dvds (gamecube sized discs).

This this will catch on any better than UMD?

the benefit this has over UMD is that while the DVDs are smaller theyre recorded in standard DVD resolution and format which means you can play them on any dvd player out there (the mini discs themselfs) The player looks to suck ass with such a minute screen

Meh, I never really understood the whole 'watching movies on the go' thing. If I want to enjoy a movie, I'll do it in a dark room, on a nice TV with a decent sound setup.

Well since there's absolutely no content available on 3" DVD, I guess I don't really see why anyone would buy one of these things. Maybe the company is hoping people aren't paying close enough attention or something. It's kind of inexplicable.

Well, you could always take your existing movies and recompress the ever loving shit out of them and burn it onto a mini DVD-R for watching on the go. Probably wouldn't be too bad considering how small the screen is.

And what's with the gigantic black border around the LCD? Shouldn't, I don't know, more LCD be there?

You could, but the type of people who would buy a player like this are HIGHLY unlikely to have either the knowledge, skill, or equipment to do that.

The same company that makes the players is putting out content on the 3" (they had a stack right next to the players).

There was Teen Titans, a few movies, probably a dozen or so 3" titles.

Flopping like Minidisc would not be so bad-- the format's survived more than 10 years and until the last few had a pretty big base outside of the US.

When I was in Japan, you'd see people all over the subway with them.
