Here's where Nickelodeon stood for the week of 2/21/05-2/27/05:

#2 SpongeBob Squarepants

#4 (tied) The Fairly Odd Parents

#6 The Fairly Odd Parents

#7 (tied) The Fairly Odd Parents

#9 SpongeBob Squarepants

#10 (tied itself for three spots) Spongebob Squarepants

BTW, I watch both shows religiously. :)

Not only that, but those shows are both cash cows for merchindising and such. I can't imagine how much money they make in total for those two shows.

Back in 1998 pro-wrestling ruled the cable world.
Nickelodeon was still owning back then too, from what i remember. Rugrats was constantly in the top ten numberous (in the same week) times and usually in the number one spot.

Yes. I remember when I was a kid, they would always show that commercial thanking us for making them the #1 watched channel

spongebob merch alone brings in $1 billion+

Maybe it's just me, but whenever I flip onto Nick, it is almost always Spongebob or Fairly OddParents. They might be getting good ratings due to the fact that they're always shown.

Kids watch significantly more TV than adults, and establish a much tighter brand loyalty so this makes perfect sense to me.

Fairly Oddparents is a pretty good show surprisingly. One of the better Nick shows in the last 5-7 years. I'm not surprised they're dominating with that show.

Oh I think Nick's success has a lot more to do with the bevy of preteen-oriented sitcoms and melodramas that they put together than it does with the dozen-or-so Ren & Stimpy episodes that John K strung together. The other 2 initial Nicktoons were pretty quality shows as well, and kept the quality up long after R&S took a horrendous nosedive.

i tend to agree, but in reality, that doesn't explain why kids tv always gets the shaft, such as sports pre-empting saturday morning cartoons. same stations don't even bother showing kids shows opting for syndicated shows during those time slots traditionally for kids. i used to recall a time when there were cartoons in the morning, the after school time in additon to saturday mornings. and maybe sunday mornings.

Heck, Back in the Day "Fat Cat & Friends" in Australia used to be on a 9:00 at night! It was used as a tool to get kids to go to bed at 9:30 when Fat Cat told them to [And parents taped the episodes so they could make the kids go to sleep earlier too ;)]

now the slot is taken up by CSI and it's various knock offs.

It doesn't seem like there are anymore made for syndication cartoons. Back in the 80s and 90s there were a shitload of them, and some were high quality stuff (ExoSquad, MechWarrior, TMNT). The only new syndicated cartoon I see now is Liberty Kids (blech), and the last good one was Starship Troopers: Roughnecks.
Everything new seems to be moving to either Nick or Cartoon Network (those French-made cartoons are horrible) now.

I would think that would actually do the opposite, diluting the draw of any individual airing.

I've seen articles to the effect that the continuing uprise of 24-hour availability of cartoons through channels like Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, and Toon Disney has done nasty things to the viewership of cartoons on local stations, so they have less reason to bother now.

I just saw Channel Chasers on Nicktoons, it was fucking hilarious. Where is the GAF hype for this show?!

Fairly Oddparents is a great show. It reminds me of Rocko, in that it has some great adult humor in it that I do sometimes find myself laughing out loud.

Nick definitely is getting better.
I can't say I like the kids/comedy shows (like spongebob) but shows like Avatar and the upcoming Skyland remind me of when Nick showed some drama heavy cartoons like Belle and Sebastian and the Mysterious Cities of Gold.

I really dig Avatar (shown on Fridays at 7:30 and 8:00pm) and the Skyland (comes out in January) preview i saw is absolutely gorgeous. It's the best cel-shaded CG I've ever seen for a series.

Not really the best screen captures but it's beautiful to watch in motion.

They'll have a trailer up soon.. hopefully.

Fairly Oddparents is awesome. Every character is hilarious especially Cosmo and Timmy's dad.

Speaking of Rugrats, does anyone else think that the ORIGINAL one when they were infants was the only one that was worth watching all those years ago.

No, it sucked then, too. Klasky-Csupo's shows are the worst crap ever. Except Duckman, I guess.

Nick is strange, their popular shows seem to take quite a while to actually get there. Spongebob had been on the air for about 2 or 3 years before it really got popular; same with Fairly Oddparents. Rugrats didn't really get too big until the late 90's, well over 5 years after it first debuted.

Anyway, Nick's shows always have this sort of short attention span hyperactivity vibe to them that rubs me the wrong way. Fairly Oddparents is especially unwatchable because of this, I could swear everyone involved with the show subsists solely on Pixie Stix (though I do like the creator's new show, Danny Phantom). And the network bookends to the shows are much worse, very obnoxiously XTREEEEEME. Cartoon Network, on the other hand, seems a bit better-paced as a whole and, with the exception of Cartoon Cartoon Fridays, the network stuff outside of the shows is usually pretty stylish. Those commecial cuts that show brief, subdued CG shots of cartoon locales are class.

All I can say is that in a perfect world, Dexter would have been much more popular than Spongebob.

Avatar is great, one of the best Toons Nick has put out in a long time and a lot more watchable than the other drek being produced by American brains at the moment.

Yes, the original episodes of Rugrats, before it got a makeover and added Dil, were awesome. I was just watching one of those old episodes yesterday, and aside from being flooded with nostalgia, there were moments that still made me laugh at loud. :)

As for the current Nick, I like Spongebob a lot. Fairly Oddparents not so much, though.

The list is from February. :) It really freaked me out when I was considering how to respond, then noticed that someone had already said that, and then saw that it was me.
