Dark pop

Dark pop musicians in aspect of lyrics and music, anyone want to recommend any more? Satirical. Subversive. Just a bit edgy. Downbeat.

Lilly Allen - "The Fear"

I want to be rich and I want lots of money
I don't care about clever I don't care about funny
I want loads of clothes and fuckloads of diamonds
I heard people die while they are trying to find them

And I'll take my clothes off and it will be shameless
Cause everyone knows that's how you get famous
I'll look at the sun and I'll look in the mirror
I'm on the right track, yeah I'm on to a winner

...

Life's about film stars and less about mothers
It's all about fast cars and cussing each other
But it doesn't matter cause I'm packing plastic
And that's what makes my life so fucking fantastic

And I am a weapon of massive consumption
And it's not my fault it's how I'm programmed to function
I'll look at the sun and I'll look in the mirror
I'm on the right track, yeah we're on to a winner

...

Now I'm not a saint but I'm not a sinner
And everything's cool as long as I'm getting thinner

Marina and the Diamonds was close on a few songs.

The last dark pop song that I was obsessed with was that Tove Lo - "Habits (Stay High)" song (also one of the rawest pop music videos ever). Too bad the rest of her songs don't reach that.

Staying in my play pretend
Where the fun ain't got no end, oh
Can't go home alone again
Need someone to numb the pain, oh
Staying in my play pretend
Where the fun ain't got no end, oh
Can't go home alone again
Need someone to numb the pain

[Chorus]
You're gone and I got to stay high
All the time, to keep you off my mind
Oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh
High, all the time, to keep you off my mind
Oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh
Spend my days locked in a haze
Trying to forget you, babe
I fall back down
I gotta stay high, all my life
To forget I'm missing you
Oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh

Lorde is pretty consistent from modern pop to have a darker edge.

Lorde - "Tennis Court"

How can I fuck with the fun again, when I'm known?

My favourite dark pop song of all time is Just Jack - "Starz In Their Eyes". Goes in a lot about fame, much like Lilly Allen. Helps that I saw it at night on MTV 2 channel back when that was a thing.

They'll be making sure you stay amused
They'll fill you up with drugs and booze
Maybe you'll make the evening news

And when you're tripping over your dreams
They'll keep you down by any means
And by the end of the night you'll be stifling your screams

...

Remember they said you'd show them all
Emphasise the rise but not the fall
And now you're playing a shopping mall

Your mum and dad they can't believe
What you appear to have achieved
While the rest of these users are just laughing in their sleeves

Since you became a VIPerson
It's like your problems have all worsened
Your paranoia casts aspersions
On the truths you know

And now the tabloids use your face
To document your fall from grace
And then they'll tell you that that's just the way it goes
That's just the way it goes

There is Grimes, which is fantastic. Then there's Zola Jesus, who might not be conspired purely pop but is brilliant. Sia, obviously. She wrote the only Rihanna song I like that was used in the best scene of Girlhood. That little girl performance artist in her videos should be in movies, damn.

Bat For Lashes is amazing, not just because we're both British Pakistani :p Can't wait for the new album.

Bat For Lashes - "What's a Girl To Do?"
Bat For Lashes - "Daniel"
Bat For Lashes - "In God's House" (new album)

Something like this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHy3b7tsSyk
Sounds akin to early Visual Kei stuff, too. Honestly i can't figure out anything really "pop" that's very dark. You might like some of the synthpop artists or whataver it's called.
Was also gonna recommend Zola Jesus but just saw you mentioned them in the OP.
Heard of Promise and the Monster? Saw them live a few years ago, pretty good stuff.

Swim: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_r_WqhTPoDY&nohtml5=False

There's also Adna. "Run, Lucifer" is pretty good https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuF3W1huraA&nohtml5=False

Pretties for you is pretty good too, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4IQkWTYkAs&nohtml5=False

I recommend digging around in the Swedish "indie" in general, we do love our dark tunes.

FKA Twigs is brill, and Arca is really out there. Great suggestions, didn't know about Kelela.
I'd also throw in these few. Mr Twin Sister is one of the most underrated bands for real. I think I sometimes have trouble reading the feeling of music itself lol but all this stuff I posted seems like darker music to me, especially compared to general pop music.

Mr Twin Sister - Out of the Dark

Mr Twin Sister - In The House of Yes

TR/ST - Capitol

TR/ST is awesome. Had "Capitol" on repeat for days when it came out, especially the music video. Love that album.

Read thread title as "Dark Poop" and assumed this would be about digestive problems.

I then read the lyrics thinking there was going to be something about bad stool.

barring a few songs i don't think the smiths are all that dark really.. the lyrics are full of humor

especially compared to like Joy division or the cure

Nu-Gaze artists such as SPC ECO and Crystal Stilts should give you enough Dark Pop you need.

Also, if you need the Pop music with more haunted composition, check out Gezelle Twin.

Surprised no one has mentioned the current king of evil pop, the Weeknd.

While his discography is littered with dark stuff even with his current overproduced sheen, his first three mixtapes are filled with self loathing debauchery that calls to mind prime era Nine Inch Nails then anything r&b.

Imho his darkest is "Initiation" where the character pressures a girl into fucking his friends while he's having his own drug breakdown.

"I got a test for you
You say you want my heart
Well baby you can have it all
There's just something I need from you
Is to meet my boys

You've been going hard baby, now you rolling with some big boys baby
Got a lot you wanna show off baby, close that door before you take your fucking clothes off baby
Don't mind, all my writings on the wall
Thought I passed my peak, and I'll experience some fall
And all I wanna do is leave cause I've been zoning for a week
And I ain't left this little room, trying to concentrate to breathe
Cause this piff so potent, killing serotonin
In that two floor loft in the middle we be choking
On that all black voodoo, got me gum chewing
Call one of your best friends
Baby if you mixing up
Cup of that XO, baby I been leaning
Back from the come down, girl I been fiending
For another round, don't you blame it on me
When you're grinding up them teeth and it's fucking hard to sleep"

Dodecagon

works for a research lab making 6 figures
I prefer Coke

I thought this was gonna be about coke/pepsi

I read the title wrong

Thought this was going to be about cola.

Aww man, I was hoping people would point out some good sodas to try.

everytime I go to a restaurant that serves Pepsi instead of coke products, I make sure to take a mental note to never go back there.

There's quite a lot of great stuff already posted in this thread! Have a few more suggestions, although some of this stuff might cross the lines of the pop genre, I would like to say they're more pop inspired than anything.

My ultimate dark pop album from start to finish would have to be Baths' Obsidian. Probably one of my favorite albums of the past 10 years.
