Seems like author has a plan of releasing base game for free and then supporting it with paid expansions continuing the story. His announcement post implies Microprose will be helping him with that

I downloaded darkenstein 3D thinking it will offer similar experience to amazing Wolfenstein 3D with Brutal mod, but I ended up uninstalling it one hour later, because I didnt liked it. IDK why, but there's zero satisfacition from shooting enemies in this game. Also, the character models in this game remind me of mannequins or toys, so I thought I was playing a game for kids, even though there's blood in Darkenstein.
 
Shame they ruined it with the trite 'muh nazi' theme. Level design and combat looks good! I give older games a pass for that because it was semi novel in 2002, but now it's just another form of mental sloppa.

There was a cutoff. RTCW was the pinnacle. The door stayed open a few years after that. I think sometimes in the 10s the door slammed shut. Wolfenstein and a couple others get grandfathered in, but you can't make new ones. I don't make the rules man.
