DC RIP Five Years

Driving in to work this morning, I happened to be listening to the Rez soundrack and it got me thinking about the Dreamcast. I recalled it was around this time of year when the announcement came out that they were halting production.

I spent that whole day scouring the internet for news saying this wasn't happening, but alas it was. I remember looking at my Dreamcast and thinking I'd never play it again or enjoy gaming as much as I had. Took a little while, but the gaming jones did return. :)

I know in the bigger picture of things this is very minor, but it was kind of a small tragedy to me at the time. How many others remember where they were when they heard the Dreamcast had died?
 
It was a very sad day ...I even posted a thread called "the dream is over"

But after that I have played some unforgatable games like Skies of Arcadia or Shenmue 2 ... I still plays sometimes my Saturn and DC .The dream goes on.
 
I remember and it came as quite a shock. Sega was something I grew up with and I saw the Dreamcast as something they were doing to make up for everything they did wrong.

Damn, I feel like playing some Samba de Amigo now.
 
I'd known it was coming, and though it was a sad day, it was inevitable.

I'll never forget the conniptions all the Sega fanboys went into on that day. Especially the ones who were convinced DC was more powerful and would be more successful than PS2.

Man, that was a scene.
 
Last I heard, Under Defeat was announced for Dreamcast. It's still alive.

(The announcement for Sega going boom was 1/21/01 if I'm not mistaken.)
 
I remember leading up to it so many people on forums I went to actually thought it had a chance. The big argument was that the PS2 shortage would cause parents to buy a DC instead and there was all the usual anecdotal evidence about DC's just FLYING off the shelves. There was even that ad Sega put out making fun of the PS2 shortage. Then just like that it was over.
 
While I hate to quote Dragon, of all movies, I thought of it when I saw this thread:

"All these years later, people still wonder about how [the DC] died. I prefer to remember how [it] lived."

Sega throwing in the towel on the hardware side and focusing on software for all platforms was one of the biggest pieces of news in the last decade for this industry.
 
It wasnt untill after DC died that segas software started to go downhill. It really hurt them, they arent the same company anymore.
 
I was just playing Samba De Amigo on Saturday with my friends. The legend will never die!
They better make Samba 2006 for Revolution - they just HAVE to!
 
Sega died to me when they announced the release of the Saturn.

I refused to buy any of thier products thereafter. I would like to think I single handedly brought them down.
 
I can lay a graph of the happiness in my life over a graph of SEGA's success and the plots almost identically match.
 
How can I not remember Sega cancelling the Dreamcast a couple of months after I had bought one, while cancelling the US release of Shenmue 2.

Yeah, I'm pretty much hoping that one day they make Shenmue 3 so that they finally sink and disappear from the planet entirely.

In retrospect, the console is pretty much worthless now. Nearly every game(even mediocre garbage like Grandia 2) was hyped to the high heavens, not unlike every game that gets released for the Gamecube, haha.
 
I had a little DC binge going on a couple months ago. I played through Shenmue I and II, such great games, and a little Sonic Adventure...not so great. But yeah, I can't believe I was still in high-school when I picked mine up on 9/9/99

Oh, and I was so pissed when Shenmue II US was cancelled I vowed never to pay money for it. I posted at DCU at the time and I remember some people defending the decision so SEGA wouldn't lose more money...screw that, I was PISSED.
 
My step-brother got a DC on 9/9/99. I waited a few months later into 2000 to pick mine up. I had so much fun with that console. I bought about 20 games in the period of less than a year, which for me is a lot. I've owned about every major console released in the last 15 years, but I can safely say the DC is my favorite. I don't know, perhaps it's just a nostalgic moment, but I absolutely loved it.

I hate the fact that I had to put my DC away in my entertainment center (it's still close but I just didn't have room on the table for 5 consoles). After the XBox360 it was between my GC and my DC. My nephews were playing something while visiting over the holidays. BUt when I finish Killer 7, the DC goes back on the table. And I'll get back to sharpening my Virtual On: Oratario Tangram skills. My DC collection is insane!! So much Sega first party goodness!!

Damn I love that game machine!! (I own 4 of them!!)
 
I reccomend Looney Tunes Space Race to anyone looking for a good Mario Kart clone.

Back when Infogrames gave the Looney Tunes video games some dignity.
 
I live in Toronto and had a friend living in Japan buy and ship to me a launch-day DC in 1998. I was so pumped when it arrived, but then after about two days of playing VF3tb it started to exhibit bizarre slowdown and audio glitches. Sonic wouldn't play beyond the intro movie. Of course Sega North America were 9 months from the launch here and could offer no repair support, so I had to ship it back to Japan, have my friend return it for repair and then send it back to me in Toronto.

Over the next few years I spent $$$ on import DC games and now have a great collection of titles. However, I plugged it in over the holidays and that bloody slowdown/audio problem has returned! Curses! Love! Curses!
 
I can still recall the day I picked up my import Dreamcast like it was yesterday. :)

So many great games. I still pull that machine out every few months for a few games.

Virtua Tennis, Crazy Taxi, Powerstone, and Jet Set Radio will keep me coming back forever.
 
Shortly after finding out, I spent the next few weeks directing my anger at my PS1/PS2-centric friends. They pretty much snob anything Sega, those fools. These are the guys that could get anything game-related from their parents at the time, but chose not to support and embrace the greatness that was the Dreamcast. In fact, they bad-mouthed the DC whenever we had gaming sessions.

Same here. I finally pulled all my Dreamcast stuff out of the entertainment center when the 360 launched. :( I have a ton of crap too; import and domestic systems, ~70 games, wheel, keyboard, brand new controllers - it's all boxed up sitting in the basement now. *sigh* Great system...

Get a monitor on the cheap and BAM! Instant DC gaming area in glorious VGA that doesn't take up much space. I've got mine in the bedroom so it's Skies Of Arcadia right before sleepy time.

Surely they couldnt embrace the Playstation which had ultimatley caused their demise, and memmories of the 16-bit era still left a loathing in their hearts for Nintendo. There was only one solution, only one platform they could call home...
 
I remember the day DC was unveiled to the world, I was reading GameFan Online. I was so excited at what I was seeing and reading that I had to print it out for my friends to see, even though they had the net too

I'd love to one day see a new Sega game machine hooked up to my TV
 
I was shocked as well, but back then I didn't follow sales figures at all. I was saddened, but then the release of the GameCube and Xbox made me put the system behind me by the beginning of 2002.

The solution was to enjoy their games on all platforms and to start putting twats like you on ignore.
 
Long live the Dreamcast. I bought as many games for that in its short life as I did for PS2 from launch to now. Or XBox from June 2002 to now.
 
I still love my dreamcast. It's the last system that was OK not to be a multi-media machine. Unfortunatley, that's what killed it-and to a lesser extent the gamecube.

I don't mind if consoles come with secondary functions, but I'll certainly miss the simplicity of game only machines. Really the focus on consoles now is "what can it do besides gaming" when it should be "what can it do to evolve gaming"

Just about every new Naomi game is getting a DC port these days. Wouldn't it be funny if the DC had a longer "life" then the Gamecube or Xbox did? I don't see anything past 2007 for either of those, and I've seen way too many "last DC games" come out to believe that its swan song is actually for real this time. And who else isn't anxiously awaiting 2009, crikey, that will be soooooo awesome.

My DC is still plugged in (sad I know).
Radilgy looks like doujin game, Under Defat on other hand is FTW! And I don't think UD will be 'last DC game' either.

Not really my Megadrive, Saturn and DC have never been unplugged. I can honestly say that after the DC died I don't care about gaming as much as I once did.
