Because ESPN isn't interested in journalism or having journalistic standards. They are an entertainment company that sells packaged multimedia sports-based entertainment product, not journalism. This is the company line. Sometimes, they even admit that this is the company line.
ESPN, since they aren't bound by these journalistic standards, will play the "we'll tell your story the way you want it told in exchange for access" game on a national level. Used to be it was only the college town papers and radio outlets that would allow themselves to get bullied in such a manner by the big Universities' SIDs...
Or that ESPN, just like most of the other main steam news outlets that have been covering the story, didn't take the internet super paranoid everything is a conspiracy cover up angle as deadspin presented it.
Again and again myself and others have pointed ESPN has nothing to gain or lose by going in hard on Te'o. Some of their personalities have ripped into him. Some completely believe him and some don't believe a word he says. ESPN as a whole hasn't formed some official opinion that he is innocent. They are only going on what was offered through Te'o. Schaap himself said while he Te'o seemed sincere in his answers, its up to the viewers to decide if it makes sense.
ESPN has gladly been a part of the taking down of other famous sports personalities in the past, why in the world would they care to cover up for Te'o? What is to gain from it? They don't even have a contract with ND.
Some of the over the top conspiracy stuff needs to stop. Te'o might be completely behind it. A crazy lying psychopath but some of you assumed that position from day 1 and anything that comes out that doesn't support that stance is automatically part of some sports media cover up to protect ND and the kid himself.
