My parents live in the boonies. The only option they have is dsl, and it's very slow. Streaming anyhting through their wifi is slow, if it works at all. I was thinking about trying powerline adapters for them. Would that be a good solution? Anyone know a good set? Any other ideas? Thank you for the help.

If the dsl coming in is garbage it wont help at all. Edit - it the dsl is the issue nothing will help

If the wifi is the issue it may help a lot.

I figure it can't hurt to try. Do you know a good set of wireless adapters?

You need to test your dsl connection first. Take an ethernet cable and connect to your laptop, run some speedtest, then decide whether to invest a wireless/powerline adapter.

Code:
                   240p 360p 480p 720p 1080p
Resolution 426 x 240 640 x 360 854x480 1280x720 1920x1080
Video Bitrates
Maximum 700 Kbps 1000 Kbps 2000 Kbps 4000 Kbps 6000 Kbps
Recommended 400 Kbps 750 Kbps 1000 Kbps 2500 Kbps 4500 Kbps
Minimum 300 Kbps 400 Kbps 500 Kbps 1500 Kbps 3000 Kbps

pick your preference.

Note: it's bps, that's bits per second.

Thank you. That is very helpful.

If possible, I would connect directly to the DSL modem via wired (ie Modem---->PC) and try to stream. That will allow you isolate the issue.

If it's fine on wired, depending on your house, it might be a better idea to try either a better wireless router (assuming you devices can connect to some of the newer standards) or a extender (not a great solution imo).

Personally, I can't recommend powerline adapters though. I think there are better solutions in almost every case.

What DSL connection do they exactly have and are you sure there is no upgrade uptions available? VDSL2 speeds can go up to 100Mbit/s. Newer technologies (Vplus, G.fast) can go into gigabits.
