Anyone have any reocmmendations? Any that have a blu ray player would be awesome though I reckon that's not a thing.

for what purpose?

Multi purpose - Nvidia Shield TV (2017 or 2019 Pro)
just streaming - New Google Chromecast TV

Installing some.......apps that aren't mainstream shall we say (Stremio for example). And ones that get updated, the cheap chinese knockoffs don't take other android versions and pee me off.

either of my suggestions then, shield if you plan on doing more intensive stuff and dont mind playing the extra price, else the new chromecast.

only thing to bare in mind is the shield 2019 tube and the new chromecast both lack much in the way of storage, you can however attached a usbc hub to the chromecast if need be

I bought a few over the years. Some are crap, some are decent. Firmware support are wonky and you're almost on your own trying to find updated firmware but that's what I get for paying the cheap unit.

I can't recommend which to get but perhaps the best one is Xiaomi Mi box, although I never tried one.

I have a cheap Chinese one, they are not Google play certified. Meaning you can't install certain apps via the store (Netflix), you need to get the apkm and get from the store an apkm installer (Netflix is split in three apk that can't be installed individually via OS default app).
Netflix loads Web layout, if the remote of android box doesn't have a scroll function then you need a Bluetooth mouse or a phone with android box remote app to serve as a mouse.
Disney plus works fine.
Amazon prime works... Weird.... Again, Navigation issues with a remote, not as bad as Netflix.
Kodi works great, however, at least this box (but many others too from reading online comments, had a custom version of kodi, so it wouldn't update. I had to delete kodi and redownload from the Google store so it updates normally.

I had a Shield TV and it lasted exactly 13 months with normal use. While it worked it was great but too expensive for it to stop working so quickly.

Haven't bought another one since then but I gifter a Xiaomi Mi box to my dad and he is pretty happy with it.

I’ve had the 2017 Shield since launch and it has been my dedicated Plex server ever since. I can run three difference transcoding streams at the same time, but then everything else takes a hit on performance. I converted all of my files to m4v, which can run natively on my phone, and can run multiple streams while playing different emulators...including Saturn. That thing can take pretty much anything I throw at it. I love that little box and use it heavily almost everyday!
