Decent (but cheap) video cards for PC gaming?

I've got a Geforce 4 MX440, which is apparently old and not fit for modern games, as evident by the fact that San Andreas is chugging on my machine. There anything I can get that's a little more up to date, but not like $300 or anything ridiculous like that?

Nothing less than a 6600GT. I think even 6800 is comming down close to 6600GT. Is the 6800 worth $20 more?

I upgraded my 1500 mhz PC with a Geforce 4 Ti4600 for only €55. I can play HL2 and Doom3 just fine now. It's probably not a very long-term solution, but it's great for now.

System specs please.

Random baseless guess: 6600 GT.

Sorry to bump this ancient thread, but I wanted to toss in this picture of the motherboard so I could ask if I could even get a newer card in there, since I'm not certain (don't know if they're PCI-e slots) Plus some other people were asking about memory/cards/etc. so this might help them out too

They're not PCI-E slots. PCI-E 16x slots are longer, thinner, and black. PCI-E 1x slots aren't used for video cards, and they're short, kinda like AMR/CNR slots.

Guess I'll have to use AGP then. Thank you for saving me the potential hassle of trying to return "used" merchandise to Best Buy

No point in making a new thread so I figure I'll ask in this one. Are you pretty much set with the graphics card you have in a laptop or is it possible to upgrade? My machine has a GeForce 4 MX On The Go, which has been fine for FFXI and Unreal Tournament 2004, but I was just curious if a future update is possible, and if so, how much of a pain in the ass it would be?

You going to have to research because each laptops are built differently. Laptops from major brand like Dell and HP/Compaq have few notebooks with limited videocard upgradeability. The x1000 from compaq for example can upgrade from Radeon 9000/9100 mobility to a Radeon 9600 I think, not sure if it can get to 9700/9800 or even x800 mobility(heat issues).

Taiwanese laptops like from Asus have far more upgradeability for video cards, I believe you can switch from geforce's videocard to radeon's videocard if you can order them. But their warranty services aren't very good compared to Dell or HP/Compaq.

Like I said before, you are going to have to research.... If the videocard is built onto the board, you are out of luck, but if it isn't..... then it's possible that it can be upgraded.

Well, it's a Compaq R3000z. The only thing I think I remember reading that sounded like it applied to the graphics card is that it has an AGP4x slot?

AGP4x doesn't necessarily means that you can switch card, it could just mean you have AGP4x bandwidth between the card(built into the motherboard) and the system RAM.

This place has tons on info/discussion on notebooks.

Alieanware notebooks are VERY upgradeable, but are pretty expensive. You are looking for something cheap since you pointed out the R3000z which goes for under 500 buck now.

it also costs about 2x as much.

the thread calls for a decent (but cheap) card.

im happy with my 6600gt for the price. it runs BF2 at around medium settings no prob.

get 256MB if you can though. I have a 128MB 6600GT AGP, and I kinda think 256MB would have been a better investment.
