Decorous music for my wedding reception.

I'm getting married in 2 weeks and I'm trying to put together a playlist for the wedding. Its a fairly formal affair and I'm planning songs for various stages of the reception. I was thinking of some laid-back more instrumental kind of stuff for the dinner, some more involved pop-rock in the middle, and some smart upbeat danceable tracks for the end.

I'm only going to have creative control over half of the time, so I need to make it count!

For my three phases, I've been thinking of artists along the lines of:

Air, Cinematic Orchestra, DJ Shadow, Four Tet, Radiohead

Jeff Buckley, Elliot Smith, Wilco, Sufjan Stevens

Phoenix, Annie, The Avalanches, Erlend Øye, M.I.A, Ratatat, RJD2

Does anyone have any suggestions for tracks (track suggestions being more helpful than artists whole cataloges) I should include by artists similar to the above? I'm trying to keep it fairly inoffensive for the wide audiance that will be there and also trying to stay away from melancholic lyrics, but staying away from the 'music for people that don't care about music' cliches.

For the first series, i'd recommend the following:

Thievery Corporation - Tropicando
Bonobo - Scuba, The Shark, The Sicilian
dZihan and Kamien - Ford Transit, Where's Johnny Sabatino?
Kid Loco - She's My Lover, Relaxin' With Cherry (Gak Sato Pre-Echo Mix)
Lesiman - Messaggio
Visit Venus - Planet of the Breaks (Arrival), Harlem Overdrive,
Mr. Scruff - So Long

i'm sure there's more, but those are the songs that come to mind.

And man, that's gonna be a kickass reception. Any chance of getting a copy of the discs with tracklistings? :)

uh, I think you should go for a more classic soundtrack for your wedding. The indie/instrumental hiphop might not go well with your aunts/uncles and grandma

I thought of several movie pieces that might suit the occasion

Apollo 13- Main title

Bruce Almighty- AB Positive

Braveheart- The Secret Wedding

The Rocketeer- Rocketeer To The Rescue/End Title

Meet Joe Black- Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World (Highly recommended. One of the best renditions i've heard)

'Star Wars Death March' (Vader's theme).

LOL my friend actually had this playing when he and the groomsmen walked out into the actual wedding. It was fucking ridiculous but it got a good laugh out of the church. Then at the reception he played the music from the matrix when Neo and Trinity walk into the building with all the guns during the wedding party introduction.

Bad idea to ask this forum to pick music for a wedding of all things, unless you have the kind of family & friends that write band names on their shoes. :lol

Seriously though, looking at your choices I'd say you need to pick stuff with a broader appeal. I know it's your day and there are quirky songs you personally want to hear, but at the same time you need to balance that with familiar stuff that people will recognize and groove to at a reception.

No matter how kickass a song is, most people won't rush out to the dance floor if they don't know it.

I went to a friend's wedding last week and everything was nice on the reception except the music. They hired this band that consisted of a guy with 3 keyboards, a sax player and a drummer, who went to play a bunch on known love songs during the night. The problem was that they all sounded all Kenny G-ish.

The most upbeat song of the night was Stevie Wonder's "I just called to say I love you".

Yours sounds like a good choice, except if there are a lot of old people.
