From the developers of Rift, Trion has released a sci-fi MMOFPS, Defiance, on PC, PS3 as well as the Xbox 360 - tying them all into the upcoming SyFy science-fiction TV-series by the same name. In addition to the events of the show influencing the game, there's a chance that what you do in the game might affect the show as well.
The game follows the so-called B2P-model, which means that you buy the game but do not need to pay a subscription fee. Instead, there will be both microtransactions and larger expansions to add content in addition to the free content updates.
In the world of Defiance you play the role of an Ark Hunter, a specialist in survival, combat and tracking who braves dangerous frontiers to locate and retrieve lost relics of alien or advanced origins in return for great financial rewards. Currently you can play as either Human or Irathient ark hunters, but more playable races are confirmed (one of which will be in the DLC season pass)
Wreckage from the Votan ships that exploded in space periodically falls to Earth. These meteor-like fragments usually contain rare and valuable alien technology. While Small arkfalls can be tackled by a brave Ark Hunter or two and go unnoticed by everyone else, Major arkfalls are impossible to ignore as they blacken the skies, turning the surroundings into a violent torrent of debris. As an Ark Hunter’s EGO sounds the alert, a massive section of arkfall impacts the land. Filled with arktech wonders and/or rare resources, these large arkfalls attract a horde of beasts, who are often in turn dwarfed by a massive guardian of the species, intent on claiming the arkfall for themselves. Only an army of powerful Ark Hunters can hope to stand against the monsters of a major arkfall and live to claim the glory and rare rewards found within.
Guided by the celebrity scientist Karl Von Bach, a team of Ark Hunters embark on an Earth Republic-funded expedition to find a mysterious alien relic rumored to have been lost in the Bay Area. Unfortunately, they are not the only ones searching, and their ship is soon brought down by mysterious forces. Now the Ark Hunters must try to gather local information to find the artifact and thwart looming dangers that threaten all life in the Bay Area. In addition to the main missions following the main story line of the game, that is tied to the TV-series, you will as a player be able to engage in a number of side-missions as well as challenges with leaderboards and special rewards of their own.
In addition to being able to explore the missions, side missions, and challenges with your friends, you'll be able to shoot them up too if you so fancy. There's both instanced PVP as well as an ongoing world PVP called the "Shadow War".
Ark Hunters in the vicinity of certain arktech will receive mercenary contract invites to an ongoing Shadow War. Those who choose to sign up become what are known as Shadow Operatives, soldiers working in the “shadows” of Echelon, a private military corporation. These Shadow Operatives quickly fill the ranks of two teams. Teams are then directed by Echelon to converge on the fallen arktech, where they must battle to claim the prize.
To the winners go the spoils: Echelon credits to be used on special gear, weapons, and armor, as well as a ranking on the Echelon mercenary leaderboards.
Through the coures of the game you will recieve a number of EGO points. These can be spent on EGO powers, Blur/Cloak/Decoy/Overcharge, and a number of EGO perks which provide passive benefits. You don't need to go into this system blindly though, as Defiance fans have put together an EGO point calculator.
