OMFG HOLY MOTHER OF MARY IN HEAVEN I CANT BELIEVE IT WTF WHERE ARE MY SEDATIVES AAAAHHH
Now THIS is a much better battle Alpha.

Both are pioneers of the electronic dance sound from the 80s.

I vote for DM as my fav, but only by a hair :)

I already voted (essentially) in Alpha's thread but my vote is for Depeche Mode. New Order kicks ass but the battle isn't even close.

Depeche Mode is generally weak outside of singles, Violator and Music for the Masses excluded.

New Order hasn't put out a weak song. Bonus points for getting a non-embarassing performance out of Billy Corgan on their last album.

New Order +1. And not just because of the Joy Division thing, either. I bet Hideo Kojima would agree with me.

Hmm, interesting quote....

I diasgree that Violator and Music for the Masses are DM's only notable studio album efforts. How on EARTH did you come to that conclusion? Never heard SOFAD, Black Celebration or Ultra 'eh? :)

What does Hideo have to do with NO?

First of all, even the singles off Songs of Faith and Devotion are garbage. That album is their low point. Actually, I own Ultra. That's not a bad record at all. Not Violator or Music quality, but passable. Again, the singles are easily the high point. Depeche Mode is a singles bands.

New Order is ALSO a singles band, but I happen to love all their albums, too.

The Hideo thing is a joke. He likes Joy Division a lot, which means he'd probably fight on the side of New Order. Both things mean I love him a lot.

new order for fuck's sake. depeche mode are purely an artefact of their time. totally disposable. new order's music remains singularly humane and vital and original. and they had two immediately recognizable, signature SOUNDS - sumner's guitar, and peter hook's mighty high-register bass.

although i'll admit that violator was one of the first albums i ever really liked.

if i were allowed to consider joy division and new order one band, i'd probably call them the greatest ever.

Fair enough.

Damn he likes JD, that's pretty cool. As much as I love NO, and although I have owned JD's release of Substance for years, I still have not invested time in JD's music and it has not warmed up to me. Should I give Substance 1977-1980 another chance?

Here, here. JD consistently ranks as one of my favorite bands, but if I were to add the strength of the New Order catalog into factoring, I don't see any possible way they wouldn't be all-time number 1.

*Listens to Joy Division covering 'Sister Ray'*

If you already own Substance, it's a good starting point. If you don't own it, just get the Heart and Soul set. It's both the albums, the eps, and unreleased demos, with a good portion of live stuff (of varying recording quality). It's arguably all the JD you'll ever need, and it should run you 60-80 bucks or so. Believe me, once you start getting into them, you'll want to get your mitts on everything available.

New Order, how the hell Hooky managed to play bass while tying his shoelaces I'll never know.

(Forgive me Darkshire :p)

People that vote for Depeche Mode really need to be put into internment camps.

Have you kids listened to Power, Corruption, and Lies lately? How about the 12" version of Blue Monday?

Or Technique or Substance for that matter.

That explains why you like DM, your ears are fucked or full of wax :p

New Order, easy. New Order is the best group of all time, in fact. I can't wait to hear their new album later this year which they say sounds Technique-ish (brilliant album).

Yeah that's a cool track. Though is doesn't hold a candle to Someone Like You or Crystal...two of the best tracks they've out in years.

Also, it's funny how many people love the new ability to make custom soundtracks in Xbox games. I've been turning down the bgm in and listening only to the sound efx while using a studio mixer to blend in songs from New Order and Depeche Mode for years! It's works great!

You make a good point regarding DM's singles. I've collected all their singles over the years and man, do they have some fantastic remixes and B-Sides. There is NOTHING like racing around the Oval Shooting Hoops track in RR Type 4 for example, while listening to the extended version of Get the Balance Right, Halo or Sea of Sin, while having just the car's engine moaning in the background. It has to be experienced to be believed.

Something else I didn't know existed. I thought having Substance, Unknown Pleasures, and Closer would be enough. Thanks for convincing me to track down Still tomorrow!

Depeche Mode, no question.

I do consider myself a New Order fan, but I grew up with DM.

p.s.Seeing the sea of hands waving back and forth during "never let me down again" on the singles and exciter tours was a great experience

Hideo Kojima approves this thread.

Personally, I don't want to pick a "winner", I love both of them. Except I've been loving Depeche Mode a bit more recently (Devotional DVD next month, can't wait!).

edit: And I must add that DM absolutely DESTROYS NO live. Dave Gahan's charisma could destroy entire nations.

In spite of the fact that I like NO more as a whole, I cannot dispute the validity of this statement. DM is amazing live.

So I go to this club in Alhambra, California last Saturday night called Ambiente. They've got 80s going all night in the back patio, man was it a party. So many cute girls with their hair pulled back, high pompadors, and blue eye shadow. Anyways, New Order's Perfect Kiss comes on and everyone just goes nuts; good times, good times.

So I go to Best Buys to buy some New Order and they've got nothing. I try Walmart and they've got nothing. Truly truly sad what has become of the retail music scene. There use to be a time when places like Tower Records, Sam Goody's, and Wherehouse were the place to go but now they're all nearly gone thanks to Best Buys and Walmart.

New Order. And they win easily, even though I love Depeche Mode.

If anyone can get me an animated avatar of the start of the True Faith video I would love them. *slap**slap*Slapslapslap*

And leave Hideo out of this! Do not taint New Order!

I couldve sworn I posted in this thread before...but uh yeah New Order....by far.

I could never really get into Depeche Mode, but have been a big New Order fan for a long, long time. +1 New Order.

What does it say that until a few months ago, I don't think I'd heard of either one? I mean, I guess I must have seen them mentioned when lipping through a magazine on occasion, but that was it.

+1 New Order
They're truly a classic band that excels equally at dance music, rock and roll, new wave, stately orchestral pieces, pop ditties, and ballads. With the guitar and bass work, masterful synths, an amazing sense of melody and dynamics, what's not to love?

DM is an ok singles band, but they seem, well, cheap and tedious in comparison to New Order.

Actually, this seems like as good a place as any to ask: what are the best songs by each?

By the way, Mercury, I love your avatar. Best movie ever.
