Did Capcom's 2d fighting game die or something~?

Capcom Fighting Jam is Capcom Fighting Evolution. Evolution is it's English name. The canceled game was a 3D fighter called Capcom Fighting All Stars.

All their so called "new fighting games" are the same fucking thing each year with 10 old sprites and animations. Capcom Vs SNK2 was the last good fighting game they pulled off. They should have stopped there and started on SF4. Quit beating around the Fucking bush capcom!

Not that much of a market anymore for them unfortunately.

Its not that theres not a market for, especially with Arc systems and SNKP making a killing off them, its the simple fact Capcom all but abandoned making arcade games.

Capcom seems to be content just porting their older fighting games to newer systems, it would seem. That pretty much just leaves Sammy and SNK, with a few smaller and far-less known developers like the people that make the Melty Blood games and IGS (Spectral Vs. Generation is coming to PS2 in March) making 2D fighters.

However, I'm pretty sure that Capcom is behind the popular Gundam arcades that are in arcades right now. I don't get why they don't try their hand at making another licensed fighting game for a company like Bandai.

They didn't work much on that one (Capcom Fighting Evolution, unless you're talking about the cancelled Capcom Fighting Jam) either.

Capcom Fighting Evolution = Capcom Fighting Jam

It was Capcom Fighting All-Stars that got cancelled. All-Stars was a 3D fighting game that got too much negative feedback from testing, IIRC. It's too bad they canned it; it was at least something new compared to the uber-rehash that is Capcom Fighting Evolution. :/

capcom killed 2d fighters by almost a generation not releasing any new street fighters, darkstalkers, etc.

they just regurgitated classics

i dont care anymore at this point... i just dont want street fighter to die.

Yeah, during the late 90s, when 3D fighting games were dominating, Capcom still brought out new series like Street Fighter III, X-Men Vs. Street Fighter, and JoJo's. Then they just released Vs. games this past gen that got progressively more and more rehashed.

I wish they'd try making new versions of Star Gladiator and Rival Schools; give them game play overhauls and make them play more 3D than like 2D fighters with polys.

Almost anything is better than new MK games. At least the 2D MKs were ok for their time. I don't think I've ever seen anyone that actually likes Jam. Occasionally you'll see someone say it's decent or playable but that's it. The day you see Capcom Fighting Jam in someone's list of favorite fighters is the day Duke Forever ships.

Has there ever been a major 2D release by Capcom with this much apathy? It's like the entire collective fighting game community agreed to ignore it. The game was stale and boring the day it came out.

yeah , i do see 3rd Strike as good as street fighter can get really. They should just do that style with more supers and MORE characters and revamped graphics. With online gameplay, team battles and shietload of more modes

Do you really want to see the 1994-1995 Street Fighter Alpha and Darkstalkers sprites in a new game?

Keep the past in the past (and retro re-releases).

Unless the sprites and backgrounds in a new 2D fighting game are at least Street Fighter III- or Guilty Gear X-quality, I don't want to see it.

Been enjoying Neo Battle Colliseum off and on. Anyone know who's supposed to dominate that game? Some character(s) always dominate an SNK game.

Edit: Also, did Rumble Fish 2 ever hit PS2? My joystick is literally starting to rust.

Disclaimer: the following is all hearsay and speculation.

Supposedly the main reason Capcom has stopped making fighters is because the main producer of all Capcom's big SF titles since SFII, Yoshiki Okamoto, left Capcom and started his own gaming studio. There was hope of him starting his own fighting game franchise(s) but I seem to remember the first title announced from his studio being some samurai game. Not only that but according to information posted by Akiman, one of Capcom's lead character designers, the rights to the entire Street Fighter series were sold to the Capcom USA division. So (again, supposedly) any more SF games released in the future will come from Capcom USA.

The above is a summation of stuff I remember and the couple of links below I quickly found in Google to make sure I wasn't smoking crack:

That's true; Capcom USA does now own the rights to Street Fighter. Street Fighter Zero 3 Double Upper on PSP has a "Copyright Capcom USA 2006" screen when it loads up, but that doesn't mean Capcom USA made them game; Capcom Japan still did everything.

One (or two?) of former Capcom staff made the recently-released Chou Dragonball Z fighting game that's in arcades now, BTW.

Nah, they sucked too. ;) :D

I'm glad this happened; shows Capcom that people are not going to take recycled crap that they try to pass off as a new game. Neo-Geo Battle Coliseum is the same type of game, but they added brand new characters, redrew others, and made a game that plays like something new. Capcom should have done the same thing; a 2D fighter with Haggar, Strider, Dante, Zero, Mega Man, etc. They already have some of those sprites ready to use.

Not counting the bosses, I'm not exactly sure who is at the top. Seen people dominating in arcades with the likes of Marco, Terry, Mr. Karate, and Haohmaru though. Hotaru is pretty good, too. Not sure whose at the bottom other than Shermie...

Nope, never did. But Samurai Spirits Tenkaichi Kenkakuten just came out, and it is an excellent conversion of an awesome arcade game. They added some nice features, too, like additional hidden unlockable characters, survival mode, and an art gallery. Game rocks; going to make a thread on it when I get the chance to take screenshots and unlock some more stuff.

Next up is Spectral Vs. Generation at the end of March.

Its not a bad thing that Capcom hasen't released a new Street Fighter. If Street Fighter 4 was out, I wouldnt be employed, my friends would only be able to find me at the arcade, I wouldnt shave nor bathe on a regular basis (i guess I have to eat to stay alive...live on combos? LOL!). I would be a wreck.. a happy wreck..but a complete dissapointment to my friends and family..

Im saving money right now so when this glorious day does come I will have enough money to live for a couple years on mall food so I can master the game completley.

I don't remember if it was going to be Sammy-made or Capcom-made, but too bad that news of Sammy vs. Capcom completely died off. Most likely a strong sign that it's been canned, if it even existed past the announcement. (I don't think we ever saw a single shot.)

That really isn't relevant - the SF series was produced by Noritaka Funamizu since SF Zero, including all the SF3 games.

Okamoto was gone in like 94/95 or something; there was nothing stopping Capcom from making 2D fighters after that, so I really think the whole copyright issue is the only pertinent issue currently.

Thanks for answering. Hotaru was on top of MotW and she seems good in NGBC as well. They added a lot to her with the stance shifts. Is SSTK really that much better than SS5? Do you know if RF2 is coming? I really wanted to learn that.

Spectral Vs. Generation is a 2D Gundam game? Mechs?

Never watch a Fighting Jam professional match vid. They're so boring cause anyone with long range is too dominant. I saw this guy play that mummy darkstalkers guy, nearly double perfect everyone cause no one could get close enough to ever touch him. Now that's balance.

It's like Hotaru became the 2D version of Xiaoyu in NGBC. :) I didn't know about her stances before the home version; never picked her in the arcade game...

Yes, MUCH better; it trumps all the previous SS games, even SS2. (Although SS2 will always be at the top of my list) Basically you get literally EVERY single character from every 2D SS game playable (Wan-Fu, Gen-An, Sieger...they're all in there), and different fighting styles (Think ISMs like in SFA3) to choose from with different game play elements from past SS games, so if you pick the Ten style, for example, you can do chain combos like in SS4. They finally toned down the damage from hard slashes, and the focus is more on combos now than ever before, I think.

I don't know if RF2 is coming out; I wanted to play it more myself. The only arcade I know of that had it where I am replaced the board months back when SS Tenka came out in arcades. (They recently took away NGBC and replaced it with Hokuto No Ken)

2D weapons-based fighting game based on an RPG or Strategy RPG series. I think my local arcade has it, so I'm going to check it out this weekend. Pretty sure it's made by IGS, the developer that made games like Martial Masters.

I found her stances accidentally when I went for some of my old Garou combos and made her turn around instead of hopping forward to dish the pain. =\

So jealous about Hokuto No Ken. Everything Arc does is gold. =)

I'm disappointed to hear that RF2 is up in the air. Surely, this would be profitable for Sammy...

there would be some if people actually liked them but nooo they preffer that 3D shit and that fucking pisses me off. So thank you fucking idiot mainstream gamers. Fuck you DOA/Tekken go to hell both of you.

Oh i dunno for their day games like MvC and CvS were very popular. If i went to an arcade those games were gauranteed to be occupied. I bet if Capcom came out with Marvel vs DC, or SF4, or CvS 3 the response would be crazy from the gaming community. GGX3 is hopefully in the pipeline i need to deystroy some more people with potemkin.

Er, SF series was one of the most popular and mainstream series ever...what do you expect? Generations of gamers to stick to something Capcom help themselves enrapture as well as make people look with apathy with like their zillionth SF2 creation and any afterwards? 3D may have killed the 2D star but Capcom certainly helped.

Wheres SEGA VS SAMMY? or Sammy vs SNK/Capcom or whatever it was, was that fake? or just fell off the face of the earth?

I guess there's no market for a lush 2D fighter, hopefully we'll see another Rival Schools game or a 3D Street Fighter not made by Arika.
Oh yeah, Capcom USA owns the rights....have they done anything decent? I think they did Maximo, and that's all I knows about them.

I think the last original game that didn't just rehash mostly decade old sprites was SFA3. Or maybe 2. And that was originally arcade. That's what I blame for this lack of SF games.

The next Street Fighter will likely be the first Street Fighter to begin life on a console. How fucking bizarre is that?
