Did Konami fail to establish Yu-Gi-Oh! games?

Id say Konami dropped the ball for everything in general. They had the huge DDR/Karaoke phase. They had Yu Gi Oh, Castlevania, MGS, they bought out Hudson getting cool ips such as Bomberman and they both had some smaller lesser known ips but all Konami ever prioritized was MGS.

I hope they start making Yugioh games again, lately they've been meh.

My favorite games were Eternal Duelist Soul, Sacred Cards, and Reshef of Destruction.

This version that I play on PC it's actually very cool

I stopped caring about 3/4ths of the way through the first series. That and the games were never any good. All I wanted was a game that followed the actual game rules and had visuals for the monsters/attacks.

The whole reason why I will never spend money on TCG video games is because they never have those two things in combination. #looksathearthstone but at the same time, I could care less about hearth since I have no clue who or what those characters are supposed to be.

They should probably go with the F2P model other digital TCGs are going with. You already have a working system with the physical cards. I could see it being very popular if they released a polished client like Hearthstone.

They did try with YGO Online for years but it always had pretty crappy business models. Started out with paying to play matches which worked out to ~$0.10USD per match. Then they switched to a buying packs that would contain a card and some points to buy stuff ingame which were expensive and the only other way of getting cards was trading, so it cost a lot up front to get into especially if you wanted to run decks with more than one theme. They shut it down last year tho.

I loved the GBA game. It was fucking amazing. Played the shit out of it and wasted soo many batteries. Forbidden Memories was cool too.

EDIT: Stairway to the Destined Duel.

I'd be up for another entry in the 'World Championship' series of games on 3DS... if they updated the graphics and gameplay. The DS games were fairly fun, but Konami didn't give much love to the games. Even Digimon games got better treatment.

I tried the demo on PSN. I had a deck with classic cards and they had all these weird super-fast summon nonsense cards and I didn't care enough to continue. On the other hand, I recently bought one of the GBA games from 2003 or so and had a lot of nostalgic fun with it.

I remember absolutely hating Forbidden Memories for the PlayStation. Ridiculously hard for me and I couldn't use my card codes to get decent ones in-game without an absurd number of points to redeem them. I gave up after a certain point where I could not progress thanks to a difficult boss with way better cards.

Looking at the competition, Magic The Gathering does get annual releases - on pretty much all platforms - now which are well received by fans and critics. So why doesn't the more popular TCG do that?

Yu-Gi-Oh! never has been and, at this rate, never will be more popular than Magic: the Gathering. Magic is still the #1 trading card game in the world, and it will likely remain that way for the foreseeable future. I doubt Yu-Gi-Oh! is even more popular than Pokemon and Kaijudo at this point.

That GBA YGO game Reshef of Destruction was a cheap ass game.

Constantly putting you through multiple opponents with no way to replenish your life points, to this day I still remember trying to get past those guys in the Great Wall of China.

I have no idea how I managed to beat that game

The drop in the quality of the anime also had an effect, YGO GX was terrible.

GX was the start of the Tag Force Series (the whole "boarding school for dueling" scenario lent itself pretty well for a video-game) and still had regular releases.

Plus GX is the best. :/

I remember some of the DS games were pretty fun. I kind of lost interest in Yugioh so I haven't payed attention to any of the recent installments.

GX>>>>>>>>>Yugioh>5DS>Zexal

Man I used to play these games all the time, it was way cheaper than spending my allowance at the local card store.

Best Yu-gi-oh ever was either Duelist of the Roses (not real Yugioh I know) and other than that Spirit Caller.

Man this game had it all, GX story line, a (sort of) free roam mode, a spirit monster to equip to your character, a character creator, online wifi, constant updates for new opponents and duel puzzle , and final boss with
3 God Cards

After that the Yugioh games went to thrash (the 5D's one's where OK) with the world championship Series where the only thing you could do was duel. NO STORY.
As for the lack of Yugioh on consoles I feel that yugioh games fit better on handhelds so you can have local battles like pokemon.

Anyways there is a new Yugioh game for 3DS, but with yugioh's waning popularity and the introduction of Hearthstone I doubt it will get localized.

Konami just likes to fail.

They failed to make money from the guitar games when they had Guitar Freaks in japanese arcades years before Guitar Hero/Rock Band came along.

They failed to keep Silent Hill as a profitable franchise.

They failed for having Kojima just keeping on pumping Metal Gear games

They failed from keeping PES on top of the soccer games market.

GX was weaksauce, Jaden is annoying and 5Ds is better than literally every other 30 minute toy commercial I've ever seen. At least for the first 65 episodes.

Just play YGOPro

Also YGO: Zexal Clash came out in December, which would technically count as the latest YGO game with the updated banlist/card roster.

It's still big in Japan, but in america I'd say it's the #3 TCG, behind Pokemon and Magic

Doubtful. They release even more product now than they did a couple years ago, and it was on top just two or three years ago.

Also, on some worthless anecdotal evidence: The YGO section in my local Wal-Mart encompasses half a shelf while MTG and Pokemon have to share the rest with baseball cards and Cardfight!! Vanguard.

Anyway, they absolutely failed. They let Dueling Network and YGO Pro/DevPro completely take over, despite sticking players with either online people who probably suck or complete garbage AIs compared to what Tag Force or even the inferior WC series ever had.

There's really no excuse for this, as if they released this on PSN and managed to not be money grubbing with DLC, I'd probably buy it despite their being a free option. Being able to test against AI that isn't complete trash is invaluable.

On the other hand I have to imagine the reason we don't see things like Tag Force anymore is because the PS Vita is nowhere near as popular as the PSP was.

Trading card games is by tradition not a very popular genre in videogames. The 5th gen games were good, had a lot of fun with the PS1/2 GBA games.

Oh gosh. I remember writing down all the different card combos and planet signs all the time when I was a kid. My brother and I could never beat it though. That last stretch through the maze and immediately fighting Heishin without a save?! Total bull. That, and we could never end up getting a Meteor B Dragon through many hours of grinding.

Also, 5Ds is definitely the best of the anime. Followed by the second half of the original series.

Use to enjoy Yugioh games especially ones on gba, I'm so out of loop with the card game now but I'd still consider buying a new game.

I loved the GBA and DS games they were releasing every year, but then, nothing?
They might have losed me as a costumer, too much time have passed since and I don't know if I care about this franchise anymore.
