Digital Foundry: High on Life 2 DF Review: PS5/PS5 Pro/Xbox Series X|S/PC - Big Fun But What About The Tech?

SSR is also software RT on a technical level, it's still not really what people mean when they say RT.

also doesn't SVOGI technically use conetracing?

It's software based ray tracing used for global illumination, but don't take my word for it:

And yeah, it looks pretty stunning in KCD2. Hell, it still looks great in the first game.

again, yeah, it is "raytracing"

but not the way the term is usually used.
if you see a game having Screen Space Reflections, you aren't going to say "look! raytracing!"

either way tho, SVOGI is far superior to Lumen, especially software Lumen.

If they wanted to make game with horrendous IQ on PS5/XSX and PS5 Pro, with no lighting on Series S - they delivered!
I'm confused, are you saying Arc raiders has crap IQ ? as I play on PC and on PS5 Pro and it's not bad IQ on the pro, yeah its not PC quality but hey its hard to match a 9800X3D and 9070XT without either a 5080 or 5090 ?

Sorry, I misread your post.

You are completely right about AR. They used elements of UE5 that suited them.

Most devs just use all expensive features and end up with 720p games and bad performance.

Yeah, seems you can take the engine and just drop Nanite and Lumens which seems sensible given the crap that is being turned out and produce a very solid game across multiple platforms

Specifically talking about lighting though and it's showing its age in that regard. I can't imagine anyone wants to go back to baked lighting, it just doesn't look right most of the time.

Tbh if the choice is between baked lighting but runs great and doesn't look blurry, or whatever trash UE5 is putting out, I'll take the baked lighting.

Which is why the "enhanced edition" with RTGI is coming. Someday. Soonish.

Still holds up well all things considered, with far less of an overhead tax of UE5's model.

You were told it was an underpowered Pro model.
Same people said UE5 was an over-bloated mess at one time as well.

This is not the Pro's problem nor is this the thesis.

Why does UE5 suck so much ass?
Why has like 90% of the industry decided "yes, this horrendous piece of shit that we cannot optimize is what we want?"

Because they don't need to pay high salary nerds to keep R&D on an in-house engine anymore

Even more so, epic is not selling just an engine, they're selling an ecosystem where you can hire labour from cheap countries or little to no experience juniors and they can work for you because everyone and their grandma knows UE5 first before anything else and it's heavily documented.

Accountants fucking LOVE UE5 $$$

so instead of baked lighting you want completely unstable, constantly boiling, constantly ghosting lighting?

why?

I take literal PS2 quality baked GI over Lumen any day

You were told it was an underpowered Pro model.
Even 160W ps6 on 3nm with proper rdna5 gpu and zen5 cpu will be still 2,5x+ faster from base ps5 even if it comes to raster, ad on top much better ai and rt capabilities and it should still be solid deal for 999$.
Ofc personally i would want same 3nm nextgen ps6 with 240W powerlimit(like ps5pr0 has) but thats my sonyfanboi wetdream which obviously wont be reality :P

Lumen is only really boily and noisy when paired with a bad upscaling solution though ...when it's done right it looks glorious

Rt lighting is always better than baked lighting when done competently

I couldn't name you a single game with Lumen GI that has stable and good looking lighting that is on par with baked GI.
not 1.

and the upscaler has absolutely nothing to do with it. I tried every DLSS model, I tried TSR, FSR, Native TAA, no AA.
it's all just varying levels of instability and ghosting.

you can reduce the boiling by modifying the engine file, but the best you can do is decrease boiling in exchange for dramatically worse ghosting, or the other way around.
you can also try increasing the ray count, but with how low performance Lumen is, doing that will kill your framerate really fast.

Did you just get out of jail or something? Why did you bump so many old DF threads today?
