Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

We've been waiting many, many years for Red Dead Redemption to get the PC port it deserves, but launcher issues and minor bugs apart, developer Double Eleven has delivered a very good version of the game for PC users, with rich options, impressive features and the ability to scale the game significantly beyond the PlayStation 5 version. Alex has the full tech review for you.

Making an exception to my 'no PC videos' rule for one of the best games of all time.

- Game needs R* game launcher on-top of Steam
- Technical execution is 'on point'
- Very quick shader comp at launch which leads to no stutter or hitching.
- KB and Mouse supported but controls aren't suited for KB

- Full resolution / frame rate support (max FPS is 144 fps but mods already bypassed this). DRS support also present
- Native ultra wide support but cut-scenes still render at 16 : 9 with pillar boxes

- Less camera / animation errors compared to console as FPS increases on PC
- 8K support tested, but DF recommends using resources on Ultra preset instead
- Ultra increases draw distance far into the horizon over console and cuts pop-in in traversal
- Shadow pop in is not effected by this and still pops in very close, although higher resolution and better filtering options

- AA, post process, image reconstruction support added.
- DLAA and frame gen, while not necessary, is welcome
- 4K/60 fps with DLAA runs comfortably on 4060
- Ryzen 3600 runs over 60's in the towns and can reach 100+ in barren areas
- Ryzen 7800 runs double the above comfortably

- DF tests the game on older hardware and found the game requires a min of 2GB VRAM
- Dual core CPU's also run the game but initial boot took 6 minutes, in-game is below 30 fps

- PC version has a slightly different color gamut versus console
- Some shadows also have issues rendering properly on indoor cut-scenes, but work fine in game play
- HDR is similar to RDR2, i-e SDR in HDR container, so it's not a proper implementation

Reality Redemption is the definitive way to play it. The improvements are great, particularly textures and the modder has promised more improvements and additions in the future

Eh? But claw grip and mashing X to sprint is suited to controller?? Funny.

Nobody needs to "claw grip" the controls for RDR.

It's good that the Red Dead Redemption PC port (as late as it is) is actually good and works well, going beyond simply being "a port that isn't fucked". Still waiting for a sale on Steam, but I'll keep an eye on that.
