Digital Photography: Shooting at Night?

I've been taking a bunch of pictures lately and I've been trying to take some at night, but none of them turn out. You can't see anything at all, it is all black. The buildings I am shooting have fairly well lighting on them, too. I even took a bunch of pictures in Las Vegas and still only black with little remnants of the neon lights.

Any tips for shooting stuff at night?

I'm using a Canon A85, by the way. It takes awesome pictures in the day time, but night is...

Increase the exposure time, open up the aperture, increase the ISO setting, and put the camera on a tripod (or some other stable surface). Viola!

open up the aperture (as low a number as you can get at), and slow down the shutter, at night without any ambient light around aside from the moon you'll need shutter speeds around 5 to 10 seconds. or greater.
if there are streetlamps and bulding lights you can get away with 1 to 2 second shutter speeds.
the downside of course is, you must use a tripod, otherwise even the slightest vibration (you will make it, trust me) will blur the image.
and if you are pointing at the horizon, never mind the flash, it wont be of any use.

To add a bit to that, also add a shutter delay so that the the shot isn't taken as soon as you press the shutter button, the force of which can add a little jitter to the shot which can make it come out fuzzy.

Also know that some cameras simply aren't the greatest at shooting in extremely-low light conditions. i think Canon's A-series is one of these.

I took this with my PowerShot A80 this morning, 5 hours before sunrise:

15 sec. exposure, F2.8, ISO 400. If you know how to use the manual settings, there shouldn't be any reason why you can't take shots at night with the A85.
