The Islamic State has already attracted an angry response from China after it executed a Chinese captive last week. Now the militant group, known as IS or ISIS, could rile Beijing again, this time by recognizing Taiwan as an independent nation.

In its latest propaganda video, ISIS lists the flags of countries it says are part of a global coalition against it. Among these is the Taiwanese flag. All the other flags are of sovereign nations.

Taiwan's Central News Agency linked ISIS's sudden recognition of Taiwan to a statement made by U.S. President Barack Obama at an Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Malaysia last week. Obama said that Taiwan was one of the Asia-Pacific countries in a coalition against ISIS.

China views Taiwan as a renegade province that may be reclaimed by force if necessary. The United Nations also recognizes the People's Republic of China as the only lawful representative of China and has rejected calls in the past to make Taiwan a member.

The list of countries that have diplomatic relations with Taiwan is also pitifully small.

The video comes just weeks after Ma met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Singapore, for what were the first talks between leaders of the neighboring countries in more than six decades.

The historic event was seen as a breakthrough for a relationship that has been strained since the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949 when the Nationalist Party (KMT) was forced by Communist Party of China to retreat to Taiwan. No armistice or peace treaty has ever been signed to mark the end of the conflict.

Taipei, Nov. 25 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英&#20061 called on Taiwan's citizens Wednesday not to panic about a video purportedly released Nov. 24 by the Islamic State, a radical Islamist group also known as ISIS or ISIL, in which a Republic of China (Taiwan) national flag was shown.

After a national security meeting with high-ranking officials last week, he has instructed national security units and the Executive Yuan -- the highest administrative organ of Taiwan -- to take necessary precautions and protective measures based on conclusions of that meeting, Ma said in response to media questions about the video.

Ma urged the public not to panic because of the video, but reminded them to be on the alert while traveling to foreign countries.

An online report on the Heavy.com website said the video, titled "No Respite," was released in multiple languages.

The English version is directed at the United States and taunts, "Bring it on," the report said, noting that other videos in other languages with similar content were released at the same time, and include French, Russian, and Turkish versions.

A new propaganda video by terrorist group the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) featuring Taiwan as a sovereign country has stirred mixed feelings among Taiwanese netizens.

In the video called “No Respite”, ISIS lists a “global coalition” of 60 nations who are its enemies.

The Republic of China is on the list with the ROC flag placed alongside that of the United States, Britain, China and others.

Some Taiwanese netizens joked this means the ROC is “one big step closer towards joining the United Nations.” Others were unhappy about the trouble “brought to Taiwan by the Americans.”

“Good things never come to us,” one commentator on Taiwan’s Apple Daily news website said.

“Please bring down America first before coming to Taiwan,” another wrote.

Some said they will stop going to crowded public places such as the 101 Tower in Taipei.

However, others were not intimidated. “Bring it on ISIS, we grew up with threats from the KMT and Chinese Communist Party.”

Taiwan, an island nation of 23 million, is marginalised internationally with few recognising its sovereignty because communist China claims it to be a breakaway province despite having no control over its governance. Earlier this month, the highest leaders of the two nations across the Taiwan Strait met in Singapore at a landmark summit. The issue of Taiwan’s marginalisation was among the topics discussed.

Yes but "China" and that flag refer to the People's Republic of China, not the idea of historical/cultural China.
