DivX/Xvid Dvd Players

I just grabbed a dvd player(thanks diablos for the link, picked it up on the last day of the offer :D )I know about a year ago maybe a year and a half ago there was a badass phillips dvd player that had divx/vxid support with the abilitiy to up date the codec via disc.

Stupid me didn't pick one up then. Is there a current one? Price range? Linkage?

GAF to the rescue!

Oppo is good and what I use but it's not perfect.

It won't play an wmv files, not sure about xvid files as I don't have any. Divx works but you'll get occasional macroblocking errors for 1-2 secs. I think this is all due to weak error correction on divx files. For example I've had episodes of stuff that would skip to the next ep 8 secs in but yet they run perfectly fine on the PC.

So in the long run it's a great player if you can't do TV-out from your PC to your TV and want to watch divx files on your tv. It's not perfect and sometimes you'll get eps that just won't play on it (I throw them in virtualdub and re-encode them and then they work fine), but it's a great dvd player + good divx player so I'd recommend it.

Also, if you want to watch non-Region 1 DVDs, it can be made region-free with a few button presses and can do good PAL to NTSC conversion. That's the reason I bought it. The upconversion is very good, too.

I just picked up the Philips DVP-642 for very cheap at target. It plays most of my DIVX files with no hastle and was easily coaxed into region zero.

I'd be curious to see a codec update as well.

Wait a few months for newer versions of the LinkPlayer and other competitors. I suggest you don't settle for XviD on DVD-R, get something that can play it through ethernet to network shares, in resolutions up to full HDTV (modded xbox chokes on it, I've tried).

A modded 360 could be the ultimate, if it happens.

modded xbox ftw :)

QFT! I love my modded 'box. It's PERFECT to watch anime off of, or anything else I download. Being on the network, I can watch anything off any PC, usually just my bro's PC since he d/l's all the anime.

*Very* convenient, and lots of support for it. Loads of cool stuff you can do with it, like just browsing ebaum's and stuff.

I just want to chime in on behalf of the modded Xbox. I've had other standalone divx/Xvid players, and there's just nothing that's even 1/3 as good and versatile as a modded Xbox. Throw a silenced 70mm fan in the back instead of the stock one and it has no drawbacks. Even with the stock fan it's still leagues beyond anything else.

Only thing lacking is support for multiple language mkv's, but it's not like that's available anywhere else, apart from PC, and you can strip the unwanted languages in 30 seconds.

Well, I like my DVP642.. but I find I use my standalone MPEG4 player (60GB Samsung laptop HDD) more. Oh.. it supports HD resolutions, and comes packed with cables to handle 720p/1080i.

Philips DVP42 is great, but ya nothing beats the value of a modded xbox. All you need to do is get a used one for $99 or a new one at $149, soft mod it so it has Xbox Media Center on it, and that's all you will pay. $99 to $149 for an amazing media player is well worth the money. On top of that you can still play games on it.

Sweetness. Looks like I'll go the xbox route.

See, I dumped the computer at my house and the dsl with it, since I rarely spend time at home. Family business = very little work during "work" hours. :D

So the networking dealio and all that good stuff is out of the question. The xbox will read dvd rw's right? (I still don't know what the differences in +, - , dvd r, dvd ram, all that nonsesne)

This purchase is almost 90% gonna be to watch TV rips from show's I missed, on a '97 tv, so I'm not too worried about all that high video fidelity.

My Xbox reads DVD-R and +R fine.

You've got to watch though, because certain models don't read +R. Can't remember which drive it is for sure, but I think it's Samsung that doesn't read +R.

And make sure you burn your discs as UDF (preferrably using Nero with Xbox compatability checked)
