OK, this is probably not the best place for this, but what the hell...

I'm sitting here with a Quantum DLT VS80 tape drive. This was a replacement for another HP DLT drive. Both were brand new and both have the same issue. Basically, you put a tape in and the drive will spit it back out after 40 seconds. That's it. It does not matter if you have it connected to the controller card or not, it won't hold a tape. I need to get this thing up and running ASAP...

Any ideas?

if they were both brand new, different make and models, and having the same issue i would look else where. are you trying the same tape in both or different tapes? is your backup application detecting the DLT drive correctly?

Well, I have also considered the tapes themselves, but that does not seem to be the issue. The actual new tapes that were included with each drive, for instance, have the same issue.

ARCServe does detect the drive and it seems properly configured.

def sounds like a problem with the software... I doubt the drive is bad, or the tapes are bad... from my expereinces with DLT it's usually with the configuration of the mounting software. i'm not much help admitedly, but from your description (new drives, new tapes, etc) it definitely sounds like a software issue. do you have a tech support subscription?

Well, the thing is, if I unplug the drive from the servers and simply set it on the desk...it does the same thing. In that case, no software would be involved...
