Do you judge people who name their kids after themselves?

You know, Bob Sr and Bob Jr and so on.

It's so narcissistic. You're essentially announcing that you plan your kid to be a mini-version of you and that their life will be defined by how it relates to yours.

It also only seems to happen with males, so there's a large overlap between them and people whose mindset is still stuck in the past with only male heirs being of value.

I'm a Junior. I go by my middle name. I gave my son my middle name as his middle name. Not as an ego thing I just thought it was a way to share something with him.

No...I don't judge people based on what they name their kids.

I'm a third and my parent's supported my dropping out of college to pursue my music and now support me going back to chase a multi-platform journalism degree. My dad is the CEO of his company and has expensive hobbies.

While sometimes they pressure me, they never try to "make me like them." They just unintentionally force their values on me from time to time... which is kinda normal.

I'm the 10th Daniel in my Family, it's simply family tradition.

If you makes you feel better my older sister was named after my Dad too.

No.

But I judge people who give their kids stupid names or intentionally misspell their kid's name in order to make them look "unique"

This except I'm not a junior. We go by our first names but my father my son and I share our middle name

I'll let my brother know that. He's a Jr.

I think it's weird.
If my family had such a tradition I would break it and name my son something else. Fuck whoever started it.

Tradition... so it means all father and sons have the name? How do you name your son when you are called Bob Jr...Bob Jr Jr?
Not serious? The third and the fourth. I am a second and one of my best friends is a fourth. It is not the end of the world.

No but I think it's stupid, each to their own.

Also I think this is more regional/cultural than anything, this is not common in many parts of the world.

I guess I don't think about it that way but I think it must just make things more complicated than they need to be.

Not really, but I think the kid would prefer to have a name unique to him if he were old enough to have a say in the matter. That said, I love when "so and so" Jr. makes it to the big leagues in baseball. I always pull for those guys to do well because of their link to the past.

Also, I'm glad I have an older brother :)

My name rhymes with both my brothers (om of them is a jr) and my Dad. Mom still mixes up our names after 30 or so years. I finally come to accept it.

No, here are my reasons. My son is a mini version of me. We both share my fathers first name (my son is a junior, I am not) so its kind of tradition. Don't tell me how to live my life.
Don't judge me

I feel bad for juniors; they're the ones who have to bite the bullet before you get to cool names.

Michael Smith Junior? Oh boy, that sounds bad.
Michael Smith III? Sounds okay.
Michael Smith the fourth? Michael Smith the fifth? Now that's cool.

But somebody has to "junior" before it gets cool.

I was going to name my son if I had one with my middle name as his middle name. Just because Maxwell Lee sounded badass to me. Max lee B here to fuck things up.

Is there less of a blind hatred if you're named after your grandparents? My first and middle names are each of my grandfathers' first names.

Just call him JJ.

My thoughts on the matter. I guess you could just lie and tell people you're the third.

Indiana Jones = the coolest junior

Would it still be cool if I made my kids middle name The-fourth? Like Michael The-Forth?

I think it's done out of tradition not narcissism. It's a very old tradition to name your first son after the father. Personally I think it's shortsighted and lazy.

Haha, I actually am the fifth. On one hand it is kind of neat, on the other hand it was sort of annoying having the same name as my dad. Especially since it tends to cause me to be called by a combination of my first and middle name at family functions to differentiate me if we are in the same area.

That and I feel like if I ever have a son, I am pretty much forced to make him the sixth.

This is 100% true. I would kill to have a final Fantasy number after my name. Anthony the VII

I consider it merely an ingrained tradition that isn't questioned by most people.

But then, I also don't think parents should be entirely naming a person they don't even know yet, at birth. My method would be to give one's offspring a "child name" that becomes a middle name when they reach adulthood. Then they pick a first name of their own when they feel ready for it.

I'm actually wrestling with this issue at the moment. So we know we're having a boy and I'm catching flak because I'm not interested in going the junior route. Aiden Bechet just sounds so much cooler to me.

That would be cool then I could have named myself morpheous
